|---|---|---|
| Initial facility — Zombie Resurrection Night | 1 | The sole listed existing scenario; the Black Phone rates its props and actors poorly and gives it no Scream Index. The original building has three floors, with scenes on the first two and storage on the third. |
| One-Star — Midnight Escape | 25 | Unlocked after Chen Ge completes its Ping An Apartment trial mission. The scenario grants interface control over its mechanisms and occupies the third floor plus parts of older areas. |
| First expansion — underground access | 68–69 | After meeting the visitor and approval requirements, Chen Ge selects a doorway beside Zombie Resurrection Night. A staircase opens into the rented abandoned underground parking lot. |
| Two-Star — Muyang Middle School | 103 | Chen Ge identifies it as the first unlocked Two-Star scenario and the permanent entrance/exit for the underground area. |
| One-Star — Room of Three | 133 | Rooms 302, 303, and 304 unlock beside and merge with Muyang Middle School, complicating the underground routes. |
| Three-Star — Third Ward | 188 | Unlocked upon completion of its trial mission, though Chen Ge receives only a 60% completion rate. |
| Two-Star — West City Private Academy | 261 | Unlocked as a new Two-Star scenario; Chen Ge discovers dissipated Vengeful Spirits within it. |
| Three-Star — Living Coffin Village | 351 | Opens as a limited-time deserted-village scenario, advertised as a Three-Star Scream Index attraction. |
| Three-Star — Underground Morgue | 467–474 | Unlocked through the Underground Morgue trial mission. Its public opening coincides with the Haunted House upgrading into the Trembling Labyrinth. |
| Three-and-a-Half-Star — Liwan Town | 695 | Unlocked after Chen Ge completes the Three-and-a-Half-Star trial mission. |
| Four-Star — Spirit Medium School | 934 | Includes the hidden Deep Red Campus and Red-Clothed Art Studio; Chen Ge plans more than forty ghost stories and hundreds of jump scares for it. |
| Hardest scenario — Underworld Fetus | 1142 | Nine prominent haunted-house operators challenge the attraction’s hardest available scenario in a wager against Chen Ge. |
| Four-Star — Cursed Hospital | 1240 | Offered to tourists as a Four-Star scenario by the end of the story. |
Background
Chen Ge inherits and operates the Haunted House left by his parents at New Century Park. At the beginning of the story, it is losing money, receives dismissive reviews for unconvincing props, and struggles to retain staff and visitors. Chen Ge personally repairs dolls, designs mechanisms, and manages the attraction’s day-to-day upkeep. 1
The Black Phone transforms the business model. Its app ties real-world daily tasks and trial missions to new scenarios, props, special buildings, and expansions. Completing the Midnight Escape trial proves that unlocked scenes physically manifest inside the building and can be controlled through the app’s scenario interface. 2 25 29
The Haunted House also becomes a genuine supernatural danger zone. The Mirror Monster hides in its mirrors and attacks visitors, forcing Chen Ge to cover or smash mirrors throughout Midnight Escape. 11 39 40 Despite this danger, the attraction’s popularity rises sharply; it satisfies its first expansion requirements after exceeding one hundred monthly visitors and a sixty-percent positive rating. 37
Appearance
The attraction begins as an aging three-story building with exposed props, narrow corridors, repair rooms, and a third-floor storage area. Its growth converts the building into an interconnected maze of surface and underground scenarios. 1 26
- An underground staircase opens beside Zombie Resurrection Night and leads directly into the abandoned parking lot beneath the building. 68 69
- Its entrance later gains an opaque black wooden ticket booth resembling two wardrobes pushed together. 69
- Linked scenarios share walls, routes, and hidden passages; Room of Three merges directly into Muyang Middle School. 133
- After the third expansion, the attraction becomes the Trembling Labyrinth, with the Screaming Gate and Underground Morgue among its new features. 474 477
- By the time its scenario collection has grown substantially, it can accommodate hundreds of tourists at once. 1137
Operations and Design
Black Phone Integration
The Black Phone governs the Haunted House’s development through a game-like system. Daily missions provide operational rewards, while trial missions unlock entire scenes; difficulty generally determines the value and danger of the reward. 1 2 12
- Daily tasks — Only one can be accepted each day; they range from practical upgrades, such as surveillance and staffing, to dangerous Nightmare-level games. 2
- Trial missions — Must be accepted within a limited time or the associated scenario is permanently locked. Successful completion unlocks the matching scene. 12 25
- Scenario control — Chen Ge can manipulate Midnight Escape’s mechanisms through the Black Phone’s scene interface. 25 29
- Expansion requirements — Monthly visitors must exceed one hundred and positive ratings must exceed sixty percent; three expansions upgrade the attraction into the Trembling Labyrinth. 1
- Horror Roulette — Consumes fear generated by tourists for a chance at rewards ranging from life-extending items to Vengeful Spirits. 1
Tiered Horror System
The attraction assigns star ratings to scenarios as both a difficulty measure and a safety warning. Chen Ge argues that the system is intended to prevent unprepared visitors from entering scenes beyond their psychological limits. 142
- Ghost Marriage accommodates four visitors per round. 274
- Midnight Escape accommodates seven visitors per round. 274
- Muyang Middle School accommodates up to twelve visitors and typically takes about forty minutes to complete. 274
- Muyang Middle School uses an interactive rule: visitors search for hidden student ID cards within a time limit for a ticket refund and cash reward. 133
Ghost Employees
The Haunted House eventually relies on living actors, Obsessions, Vengeful Spirits, and Red-Clad Specters. Chen Ge regards the mixture of living and supernatural employees as central to its unique visitor experience. 692
- Ghost employees can draw negative emotions from tourists, providing a renewable source of resentment and hatred. 964
- Old Zhou, Duan Yue, Yan Danian, and Bai Qiulin are trained for management, guest guidance, and scenario operation rather than simple scares. 617 630
- Four top-tier doctors join after the Underground Morgue incident, giving the Haunted House an emergency medical team. 467 468
- Dr. Wei and Old Bai later help oversee underground operations. 974 1167
Facilities and Special Structures
- Midnight Ticket Booth — Obtained during the first expansion; has a one-in-a-thousand chance of attracting special “tourists.” 68
- Ghost’s Changing Room — Contains costume rentals and a one-percent chance to trigger an “Ultimate Experience.” 261
- Screaming Gate — A heavy gate used at the entrance of the Underground Morgue to seal visitors inside the scenario. 474 477
- Ghost Story Classroom — A special building that randomly appears in Spirit Medium School and generates a ghost story each night without harming visitors or consuming Scream Value. 930
- Red-Clothed Art Studio — A hidden area within Spirit Medium School where tourists can confront fear and remove Misfortune. 934
Relationships
- Chen Ge — Owner, primary designer, actor, mechanic, and manager. He keeps the attraction running after inheriting it from his parents and personally develops nearly every scenario. 1 133
- Black Phone — Development system that appoints Chen Ge as owner, issues missions, unlocks scenes, and regulates expansions. 1 2
- Xu Wan — Early living employee who performs in Ghost Marriage, helps manage crowds, and later receives responsibility for ground-level scenarios and the spare key. 70 724 1167
- Director Luo — New Century Park director who supports promotions, funds expansion, and treats the Haunted House as the park’s principal advantage against Virtual Future Park. 616 617
- Uncle Xu — Park manager who worries about Chen Ge’s safety and finances but assists with loans, ticket sales, and crowd control. 37 38 133
- Ghost employees — Supernatural staff recruited from completed missions and real hauntings; they provide the authenticity conventional haunted houses cannot imitate. 467 692
Story Role
The Haunted House begins as a failing local attraction, then becomes New Century Park’s most successful draw through rapid scenario updates, word-of-mouth promotion, and its escalating star-rated challenges. 1 215 616
Its realism repeatedly blurs the boundary between staged horror and actual hauntings. Rival operators, including Tianteng Hospital, Nightmare Academy, and Virtual Future Park, underestimate it because they mistake genuine ghosts and supernatural phenomena for advanced props or acting. 197 744 1001
By the final chapter, the House of Horrors has become the source of an urban legend: some describe it as heaven, others as the nineteenth layer of hell, and others as a place linking nightmares to reality. 1240
