Background / History

Cursed Hospital

Dr. Gao was originally a psychologist who entered Cursed Hospital as a night-shift doctor in an attempt to heal himself. After curing Patient 10, his own illness was exposed; the hospital stripped him of his identity as a doctor and imprisoned him as Patient 0011. 1123

While confined, he befriended the Underworld Fetus in its Rag Doll form and treated it as a person rather than a monster. He planned an escape with the Rag Doll and other patients, was caught and cursed, then eventually escaped during a later opportunity. 1123

His diary indicates that his wife was still alive and his daughter had only recently learned to speak during this period. The later death of his wife became the central obsession driving his actions. 1123

Psychologist and Benefactor

In Han Jiang, Dr. Gao became a senior psychologist and a senior lecturer at Han Jiang Medical University. He treated patients including Wang Xin, Men Nan, and Wang Shenglong, and initially enforced patient confidentiality when Chen Ge requested Wang Xin's address. 104 105 145 150

He carefully diagnosed Men Nan's three personalities, recognizing that the youngest personality amplified Men Nan's talent for personality psychology. Rather than suppressing the personalities with standard medication, he consulted other experts to devise a treatment that would not destroy that talent. 145

Dr. Gao also made major anonymous donations to Muyang Middle School and personally replied to the children’s letters. His charitable work sharply contrasted with his hidden role in the Ghost Stories Society. 420

Ghost Stories Society and the Blood Door

After his wife died in a car accident, Dr. Gao attempted to revive the dead through medical instruments and supernatural methods. He pushed open the Blood Door in the Underground Morgue and spent five years cultivating the world behind it. 411 443 466

The Blood World reflected his inner state: its flesh-and-blood architecture reacted violently to his emotions, while his wife existed as the core Red-Clothed entity sustaining the door. 458 460

As President of the Ghost Stories Society, Dr. Gao treated the organization’s members and victims as “patients.” He secretly investigated Chen Ge from their first meeting, anticipated his actions, and considered him both a threat and a potential assistant. 458 465

Underground Morgue Conflict

Chen Ge entered Dr. Gao’s Blood World through the Underground Morgue’s Blood Door and confronted him in its Operating Room. Dr. Gao used corpses, blood threads, Xiong Qing, and his wife’s Red-Clothed form to trap and kill Chen Ge. 458 459 460 462

Although he claimed to have planned for every outcome, Dr. Gao had designed the confrontation to force himself into a final decision when he had no path left. He absorbed the Blood World’s despair and became its final Vengeful Spirit. 465

Before the Underground Morgue collapsed, he asked Chen Ge to protect Gao Ruxue and close the out-of-control Door in Liwan Town. In exchange, he offered the Ghost Stories Society’s remaining assets, information about Chen Ge’s parents, and the method for closing a Door. 466

Liwan Town and Cursed Hospital

Dr. Gao later returned in Liwan Town as a chain-bound, unstable Red-Clothed Specter. The faces and voices of those bound to him manifested from his body, and he fought the Shadow while being consumed by the negative emotions he carried. 683 689

He and Zhang Ya defeated the Shadow, after which Dr. Gao took half of the Underworld Fetus’ heart. 691

By the time of the Cursed Hospital battle, Dr. Gao had become a God of Calamity. He dragged the Blood City through the black fog, pierced Cursed Hospital with his chains, and separated the Blood-Clothed Dean from the Corpse Mountain and Sea of Blood. 1225 1226 1230

After the Dean’s defeat, Dr. Gao stated that he had fulfilled a task entrusted to him by the Child in the Mirror, implying an older agreement connected to his survival and long-term plans. 1237

Appearance

Dr. Gao is a tall, upright middle-aged man whose composed expression and immaculate white lab coat initially project professionalism and stability, even while standing amid gore and corpses. 457 458

  • Wears a white doctor’s coat, later stained black-red by blood and curses. 458 683
  • Maintains a calm, rational demeanor even during lethal confrontations. 457 459
  • In his Red-Clothed state, black chains wrap around his body and emerge from beneath his clothing. 683 689
  • The faces of victims and bound spirits can emerge from his body, speaking through his wounds and scars. 689
  • His eyes become blood-red when he loses control or unleashes his full power. 683 1230

Personality

Dr. Gao is compassionate, observant, and exceptionally capable as a psychologist. He sincerely recognizes the pain of mental illness and believes that only those who have endured such suffering can understand its difficulty. His treatment of Wang Xin and Men Nan, as well as his anonymous donations to Muyang Middle School, demonstrate genuine concern for vulnerable people. 105 145 420

At the same time, he is calculating and profoundly secretive. He investigates people around him, considers numerous possible outcomes before acting, and can manipulate others through carefully constructed psychological traps. 458 459 465

His morality is shaped by obsession rather than conventional principles. Dr. Gao rejects absolute definitions of good and evil, viewing himself as a doctor curing a diseased world by extreme means. His devotion to reviving his wife and protecting Gao Ruxue repeatedly overrides his humanity. 461 466

Even after becoming a powerful Specter, he is not free from guilt. The chains around his body restrain both him and the resentful victims he carries, and the burden of those negative emotions steadily erodes his sanity. 689
