Background / History

Jiraiya first meets Uchiha Gen while Gen is posing as the Otogakure jōnin “Jiya.” Suspicious of the young foreign jōnin’s motives, he nevertheless allows Naruto to accept Jiya’s ramen. After revealing himself as the Legendary Sannin, Jiraiya enjoys Gen’s apparent admiration and autograph request. 6

When Gen kidnaps Sasuke and reveals his Uchiha identity, Jiraiya pursues him alongside Kakashi and Team 7. He offers Gen a conditional release if he can prove his Uchiha lineage, reasoning that Konoha owes the destroyed clan an answer. Their brief clash ends without a decisive victor, and Jiraiya honors his promise to let Gen leave. 13 14 15

Jiraiya later restrains a system-controlled version of Gen with Wild Lion’s Mane and incapacitates him with a Rasengan when he threatens Sasuke. He attempts to interrogate Gen afterward, but receives no useful answers. 17 During Itachi and Kisame’s attack, he uses Toad Mouth Bind to force their retreat and seals the black flames that damage the summoned toad’s interior. 18

After Danzo’s death, Jiraiya uses the intelligence network left behind to warn other villages of Akatsuki’s activity. He investigates the Land of Rain, suspects that Hanzo is already dead, and pushes for cooperation against Akatsuki despite other villages’ reluctance. 44 47

He trains Naruto after the boy’s chakra nature changes, later agreeing to teach him Sage Arts. As the Akatsuki threat escalates, Jiraiya leads Konoha’s support mission toward Sunagakure and attempts to recover Uzumaki Reikawa from Akatsuki. 48 64

After Reikawa apparently joins Akatsuki, Jiraiya initially sees the act as a personal betrayal. Sasuke’s note mentioning the Rinnegan leads him to reconsider: Reikawa may be investigating Nagato’s fate or the origin of the Rinnegan from inside the organization. 74 87

Appearance

Jiraiya has long white hair, which he can enlarge, harden, and manipulate as a combat weapon. 15 17

  • Often presents himself as the “Toad Sage” or the Legendary Sannin of Konoha. 6
  • Uses his hair offensively and defensively through specialized ninja arts. 15 17
  • Is associated with giant toad summons, including Gamabunta. 80

Personality

Jiraiya is proud of his Legendary Sannin reputation and visibly enjoys recognition, particularly when Uchiha Gen treats him as an admired figure. He is easily irritated when Naruto calls him “Pervy Sage,” though he still responds with teasing affection and frequent head taps. 6 48

Despite his casual manner, he is observant and strategic. He approaches suspicious people cautiously, considers the political consequences of Danzo’s death and the Uchiha massacre, and recognizes when emotion could compromise a mission. 14 44 83

He is protective of younger shinobi. Jiraiya trains Naruto, worries about Sasuke’s safety during Gen’s attacks, and sees Reikawa as more than a useful asset—regarding him as a protégé. 16 48 74

Abilities & Skills

Earth Style: Swamp of the Underworld

Jiraiya creates a swamp beneath a target to restrict movement.

  • Trapped Uchiha Gen’s feet and forced him into the path of his own shuriken. 14
  • Used as part of a calculated attempt to test Gen’s claimed Uchiha identity. 14

Ninja Art: Needle Jizo

Jiraiya hardens his white hair into a spiked defensive barrier.

  • Blocked Gen’s large shuriken barrage. 15
  • Swept his hardened hair outward to knock down and cut through incoming weapons. 15

Ninja Art: Wild Lion’s Mane Technique

Jiraiya extends his hair to bind and control opponents.

  • Captured the system-controlled “Ye Yuan” after it attempted to target Sasuke. 17
  • The technique can restrain a target long enough for Jiraiya to attempt further suppression. 17

Rasengan

Jiraiya forms chakra into a rotating sphere for close-range impact.

  • Struck Gen in the back after intercepting his attempt to reach Sasuke. 17
  • The attack drove Gen into a tree and caused severe visible damage. 17
  • Taught the technique to Uzumaki Reikawa, who learned it after seeing it once. 28

Toad Mouth Bind

Jiraiya summons a living, flesh-walled enclosure to trap enemies.

  • Used it against Itachi and Kisame, compelling them to retreat rather than be caught inside. 18
  • Sealed the black flames that had breached the summoned toad afterward. 18

Fire Release: Great Flame Bomb

Jiraiya expels chakra-refined oil and combines it with Fire Release to create a powerful flame attack.

  • Fired the technique at Deidara during the Sunagakure support battle. 79
  • Forced Deidara to counter by detonating his Clay Giant Bird. 79

Summoning Jutsu

Jiraiya can summon giant toads for combat support.

  • Summoned Gamabunta while pursuing Deidara and Uchiha Gen. 80
  • Ordered Gamabunta to bring down Deidara’s Clay Giant Bird, while later emphasizing that the goal was capture rather than killing. 80

Intelligence and Tactical Judgment

Jiraiya gathers and evaluates intelligence concerning major threats to Konoha.

  • Used Danzo’s intelligence network to warn other villages about Akatsuki. 44
  • Investigated abnormalities in the Land of Rain and suspected Hanzo’s death. 44 47
  • Connected Reikawa’s note about the Rinnegan to his former student Nagato and inferred a possible undercover motive. 87

  • Nagato — Jiraiya’s former student, whom he once believed to be the Child of Prophecy because of his Rinnegan. Jiraiya had later received news of Nagato’s death. 24 87
