Geography

North Shire occupies the northern part of the Kingdom of Selt. Its terrain includes forests, hills, mountain approaches, and settlements positioned along major trade and military routes.

• Giant Stone City serves as North Shire's capital and as the base of the Macbeth family. 32 103
• Red Maple Town lies between Giant Stone City and Dark Night Manor; the manor is roughly 80–90 kilometers north of Giant Stone City. The land between them is largely forest or hills. 32
• Flash Gold Town lies at North Shire's southern edge, where three major regions meet. 68
• The Green Cloak Forest borders several local territories and is a source of magical beasts and valuable resources. 13 19
• The Cloud-Rising Mountains, Green Cloak Forest, and the harsh northern climate make a northern Orc approach impractical. 40
• The far-western Bloodstone Fortress guards the Rocky Gorge, North Shire's principal defensive point against Orc incursions. 19 40

Governance and Politics

Although Viscount Macbeth holds the title of Governor of North Shire, his practical control is concentrated in Giant Stone City and the Macbeth family's dependent territories. Red Maple Town, Greenwood Town, and Flash Gold Town are outside his direct administration. 32 42

Viscount Macbeth sought to expand his family into a true great lordship by annexing North Shire's noble territories. His earlier seizure of the Merlin family's knightly fief and his attempted marriage-based takeover of Red Maple Town exemplify this policy. 22 23

Macbeth's influence later weakened after a succession struggle. Bolton inherited the viscountcy but lost at least one-fifth of the family's assets in securing it. 377

Economy

Trade and Commerce

Flash Gold Town is a major trade hub linking western, northern, and central regions. To prevent noble competition for its wealth, the royal family established it as a permanently non-enfeoffable territory governed by a rotating acting mayor. 32

Red Maple Town is North Shire's leading commercial settlement after Flash Gold Town. Its wealth is based on:

• High-quality crops and wines from the Red Maple estates.
• Maple sugar.
• Magical-beast materials obtained from the Green Cloak Forest.
• Heavy investment in town and village defenses to protect trade and settlement. 19

Moonlight Wine

Moonlight Wine turned the previously remote region into a focal point for merchants, nobles, and outside factions. Demand spread throughout North Shire and across much of Celt territory, while the Mage Association's involvement deterred attempts to seize its formula by force. 42 52

Magic and Professional Influence

North Shire has roughly 140 official mages, though only a smaller number are active in the Giant Stone City Mage Association. Most mages above Level 3 in the region gathered there during Donald Melina's introduction to the association. 26

Donald was recognized as North Shire's only known Summoner after defeating a Level 3 mage while still an apprentice. His advancement to Black Iron Mage was regarded as a major strengthening of the region's mage faction. 26 28

The Mage Association's collective influence is powerful enough that even local nobles and the governor avoid openly provoking its leading members. 20 37
