Background / History

Jiraiya fought alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade against Hanzō of Amegakure during the Second Shinobi World War; the three earned the title of the Sannin through that battle. Although widely considered a leading candidate to succeed the Third Hokage, he spends much of his time traveling the ninja world for writing inspiration. 6

He is the author of the adult novel series Make-Out Hell, which he considers his masterpiece. After Shisui relays Uchiha Shingen's harsh criticism of the series, Jiraiya confronts Shingen at a bookstore. Rather than rejecting the critique, he becomes impressed by Shingen's storytelling insight and proposes a co-authoring partnership with shared royalties. 6 7 8

Jiraiya's association with Shingen draws Danzo's suspicion, prompting Hiruzen to explain the danger facing the young Uchiha. When Danzo and Root corner Shingen and Shisui after they refuse recruitment, Jiraiya intervenes and forces Root to withdraw. 12 14
