The autumn sunlight filtered through sparse clouds, casting dappled spots of light across the Konoha training ground.
Uchiha Ling had just finished a high-difficulty taijutsu routine, sweat soaking his black training gear and clinging to his toned muscles.
As a transmigrator, Uchiha Ling had long since fully adapted to this world of ninjas.
The Emotion System within him allowed him to keenly perceive the emotional fluctuations of those around him, a capability that grew increasingly precise as his own strength increased.
Suddenly, an abnormally chaotic surge of emotion crashed into his perception—it was not simple sadness, but a deeper, more complex mixture of feelings.
It was a sorrow as deep as the sea, repressed rage, an intense sense of alienation, and a feeling of bewilderment and trepidation born from symbiosis with a massive, cold existence.
The intensity of this emotion far exceeded the norm, like a boulder dropped into a calm lake, stirring up layer upon layer of ripples.
The source of the emotion was all too familiar—Uzumaki Kushina.
"This feeling..."
Uchiha Ling frowned and stopped his movements. "It's even more chaotic than when Lady Mito passed away. It seems that now that the handover is complete, the real struggle of integration has only just begun."
Without hesitation, Uchiha Ling wiped away his sweat, put on his jacket, and turned to head toward the lower reaches of the Naka River.
That was the place Uzumaki Kushina visited most often when she was in a bad mood, a relatively secluded riverbank.
The closer he got to the riverbank, the more pronounced that chaotic emotion became.
The sadness was laced with a cold, violent streak, as if two consciousnesses were clashing fiercely, making the surrounding air feel heavy.
Uchiha Ling could clearly perceive that while that massive, cold chakra was constrained by powerful seals, it was still constantly attempting to influence its host's emotions.
Uzumaki Kushina stood by the river with her back to him, her red hair dancing messily in the autumn breeze.
She stood straight, her hands clenched into fists at her sides, her knuckles white from the excessive force.
Her entire body was in a state of extreme, tense defense, as if resisting some invisible pressure.
"You're here." Uzumaki Kushina did not turn around, her voice hoarse and strained, carrying a palpable sense of sorrow.
"I felt you were here."
Uchiha Ling walked to her side.
"This time, your emotions are even more chaotic than before."
Uzumaki Kushina turned abruptly, her eyes rimmed with red, though no tears fell: "Chaotic? That's an understatement!"
Uzumaki Kushina said, almost through gritted teeth.
"It... it's in my head, making noise every single second! It's like an unwelcome guest who forced their way into your home and started bossing you around!"
"Hmph, as if I wanted to stay in this cramped place."
A cold, malevolent voice echoed in Uzumaki Kushina's mind, causing her face to pale further.
"If it weren't for you humans imprisoning me time and time again, this old man..."
Uzumaki Kushina's voice began to tremble.
"I'm not like everyone else anymore... I'll be seen as a monster! A dangerous monster!"
"Tell them that, it's better for everyone if they stay away." The Nine-Tails' voice carried a sneer.
"Humans will eventually fear you and reject you. It is their nature. Once you taste the bitterness of being isolated and feared, you will understand that I am right."
"Not like everyone else?" Uchiha Ling's tone was calm, his black eyes devoid of any of the strange emotions Uzumaki Kushina feared to see.
"Because you have a noisy roommate inside you? Or because you have an important identity that must be kept secret?"
He pointed to his own eyes.
"To many, the Sharingan of the Uchiha is also a symbol of ill omen and danger. Power itself never defines a person; what defines a person is how they choose to use that power."
Uzumaki Kushina was stunned, not expecting him to say such a thing. Even the Nine-Tails in her mind fell silent for a moment.
"Lady Mito chose you, so naturally, she believed you could handle it."
Although Uchiha Ling believed that Mito Uzumaki loved Konoha more than she loved the Uzumaki Clan and was essentially gaslighting Uzumaki Kushina, he had no way to change that and could only offer her comfort.
Uchiha Ling continued, his voice steady and firm.
"Don't forget how you dealt with those who mocked your hair color. Your fists and your perseverance don't seem like the type to give up easily."
At the mention of the past, a flash of stubbornness appeared in Uzumaki Kushina's eyes.
That was right; she was the one known as the "Bloody Habanero," the one who had used her fists to make those who mocked her hair color shut their mouths. How could she be so easily defeated?
Seeing her emotions settle slightly, Uchiha Ling shifted the topic at the right moment:
"Staying here and arguing with the voice in your head, or worrying by yourself, won't solve anything.
That isn't the style of Uzumaki Kushina. Are you free this weekend?"
"...The weekend?" Uzumaki Kushina didn't immediately react to the sudden change in topic.
"Yeah," Uchiha Ling's tone became slightly more relaxed.
"We'll call Minato, Choza, and the others, and go for a picnic at Red Leaf Valley on the west side of the village."
The autumn leaves are just about at their most beautiful; it's time to clear your head and get some fresh air.
You can't just give up on a normal life and your friends just because there's an 'unwelcome guest' inside you who doesn't pay rent and makes a racket all day long, can you?
A picnic? With friends? Just like before?
Uzumaki Kushina stared blankly at Uchiha Ling. He spoke so naturally, as if the terrifying entity within her capable of destroying the village.
Was truly just a "noisy roommate" she needed to get used to. This attitude was like a warm current, piercing through the coldness and isolation that had surrounded her.
The vast, frigid chakra within her body seemed to settle down temporarily as her host's emotions calmed slightly, no longer churning so violently.
Uzumaki Kushina took a deep breath, the crisp autumn air flooding her lungs, carrying the scent of the river and the woods.
She blinked hard, forcing back the last trace of moisture in her eyes.
Then she looked up at Uchiha Ling, her azure eyes regaining some of their former luster.
Though she still looked weary, that resilience unique to her had returned.
"Fine!" Uzumaki Kushina replied, her voice regaining some of its usual crispness and strength, even carrying a hint of a challenge—though she didn't know if it was directed at herself or the entity inside her.
"I'll go! It's a deal!"
"Kushina."
The red-haired girl turned back in confusion. Before she could react, Uchiha Ling stepped forward, gently cupped her face, and pressed a soft yet firm kiss to her forehead.
Uzumaki Kushina froze instantly, her azure eyes widening slightly as her cheeks flushed a visible shade of crimson.
She could feel her heart suddenly racing, a warmth spreading from the spot on her forehead where he had kissed her.
"Do you understand now?" Uchiha Ling let go, his black eyes appearing exceptionally deep under the moonlight.
"I never thought you were scary. No matter what is inside you, you are still Uzumaki Kushina."
Then Uchiha Ling turned and walked away, leaving the girl standing there in a daze.
Uzumaki Kushina instinctively touched her forehead where he had kissed her; the warm sensation still lingered there, like some kind of silent vow.
The moonlight spilled onto the river, reflecting the blush that refused to fade from the girl's face.
