Background / History

Ōnoki succeeded the Second Tsuchikage, whose research established Iwagakure's unique flying ninjutsu and Dust Release. The same research also produced Explosion Release and Lava Release, which Iwagakure later made publicly available to ninja who possessed the requisite chakra natures. 143 314

By the conflict with Kumogakure, Ōnoki was an aged but exceptionally long-lived leader. His high-quality chakra was described as permeating his cells, suggesting he retained decades of life despite his white hair. 314

During Kumogakure's surprise offensive, Iwagakure ambushed the invading force in a canyon. Ōnoki commanded the defense against the Third Raikage while the Raikage held off ten thousand Iwagakure ninja to cover his own troops' retreat. 316

He later met Sun Keiyun after the latter infiltrated Iwagakure unnoticed. Though surprised that the President of the Great Harmony Society was underage, Ōnoki remained cautious rather than dismissive. He is also willing to seek knowledge despite personal embarrassment. After learning that Sun Keiyun was a Sage, Ōnoki reflected bitterly on his own age and directly asked how Sun Keiyun had achieved that realm. 368
