Background / History

Nawaki was born two years before Hyuga Shinichi and grew up at the Senju compound with his grandmother, Uzumaki Mito, and his sister, Tsunade. Although he is the First Hokage's grandson, the Senju had largely integrated into Konoha rather than preserve their surname, leaving the compound mostly inhabited by elders protecting the clan's remaining traditions. 1 2 3

On Shinichi's first day at the Ninja Academy, Nawaki introduced himself with characteristic enthusiasm and discovered that they shared the dream of becoming Hokage. He soon became part of Shinichi's close circle with Inuzuka Gai and Aburame Tomohiro. 1 2

Nawaki initially wanted to become both Hokage and Konoha's greatest swordsman. He found a sword-training manual collected by Tobirama and began practicing alongside Shinichi, but abandoned swordsmanship after several weeks when he decided he lacked aptitude for it. 3 4

He later sought special training under Orochimaru and developed his own Earth–Water combined ninjutsu. His rivalry with Shinichi became a major source of motivation: during their waterfall spar, Nawaki trapped Shinichi with Mud Swamp Thousand Hands, though Shinichi ultimately won. During the Land of Whirlpools operation, Nawaki fell ill with seasickness and received treatment from Uzumaki Michiko. While recovering, he assisted at her clinic; the two grew close and later became deeply in love. 46 47 49 175

Nawaki nearly met his original fate during a mission against fleeing spies. Ignoring Shinichi's warnings and underestimating the enemy, he triggered an Explosive Tag trap. Shinichi intercepted the blast with a wind barrier, leaving Nawaki unconscious but unharmed. The incident prompted Tsunade and Shinichi to confront him over his recklessness. 84 85 86

After becoming a Special Jonin, Nawaki continued operating with the Eye-Nose-Ear Team, including reconnaissance duties ahead of the Land of Rain campaign. He also studied Water Release techniques from Tobirama's scrolls in preparation for battle. 89 98 101

The Second Shinobi World War changed Nawaki's outlook. At the war memorial, he abandoned his earlier focus on becoming overwhelmingly strong and asked Tsunade to teach him medical ninjutsu so that he could save lives. 155

Nawaki is loud, cheerful, and impulsive, often wearing a goofy smile and openly declaring grand ambitions. His initial dream combines the heroic ideals of becoming Hokage with a child's fascination for sword-wielding warriors. 1 3

His competitiveness is particularly apparent around Shinichi. He constantly seeks to surpass him, sometimes overestimates his own position in battle, and takes defeat as motivation to improve rather than a reason to withdraw. 23 24

Despite his recklessness, Nawaki is deeply loyal. He objected when Shinichi proposed a plan that would require facing the main enemy force alone, prioritizing his friend's safety over the mission's convenience. 55 His concern for Tsunade, Mito, Michiko, Shinichi, Gai, and Tomohiro also surfaced when he believed he was about to die in the explosive-tag trap. 85
