Background / History

The Ōtsutsuki developed the chakra system through the Progenitor God Body and built their power around Divine Trees, Ten-Tails, and Chakra Fruits. Their cultivation model involves planting genetically modified Ten-Tails on inhabited planets, draining planetary energy, and consuming the resulting fruit to evolve. Lower-ranking clansmen earn merit for fruit access, while most harvests are collected for the clan. 325 628

The clan's official history identifies Ōtsutsuki Shibai as its progenitor, but King Zhenruo later reveals that Shibai was not the original Progenitor. Shibai used the Progenitor God Body to establish the chakra system, defeated the Underworld Progenitor God, claimed the title of Ōtsutsuki God, altered history, and eventually abandoned the clan after becoming a True God. 693

The Ōtsutsuki destroyed the Underworld Great Kingdom and enslaved or absorbed surviving Yellow Spring races. The captured populations were used as slave labor and military resources for hundreds of thousands of years. 532 559

Five thousand years before the present storyline, the deaths of Kaguya's royal relatives triggered an internal succession struggle. The Main Family's upper ranks formed a council, Kaguya's faction lost, and the victorious faction elevated its candidate to the throne. 443

Kaguya and Isshiki later descended on Earth, planted a Ten-Tails, and prepared to harvest its energy. Kaguya consumed the Chakra Fruit ahead of schedule, becoming the Rabbit Goddess and leaving Earth partially intact rather than completely drained. 261

Earth Cultivation and the Lunar Branch

Kaguya and Isshiki's Earth mission introduced the clan's Divine Tree harvesting system to the Ninja World. Kaguya's betrayal created the Rabbit Goddess, while Hamura's descendants established a surviving Ōtsutsuki branch on the moon. 261 286

Return to the Ninja World

Momoshiki, Urashiki, and Kinshiki later launched a campaign to eradicate chakra-bearing life before Isshiki and Kaguya could return. Momoshiki targeted Konoha and the Nine-Tails, Urashiki targeted Kumogakure's Tailed Beasts, and Kinshiki attacked Kirigakure. 453

Hishiki subsequently descended personally, incapacitating or killing most living beings within ten kilometers through a soul shockwave and attempting to capture Natsume for study. 480

Infiltration of the Main Family

Natsume infiltrated the Shiki Origin Realm by impersonating Isshiki and later Hishiki. During the operation, he exploited the Gene Pool with Shadow Clones to harvest more than a thousand high-purity Byakugan in under ten minutes. 431 437 510

The infiltration also exposed the scale of the clan's slave system, with Madara, Obito, and Kabuto subjected to slave assessment and assigned to different labor or enforcement divisions. 448

War with the Maha Clan

The Maha Clan invaded the Shiki Origin Realm with the Demon God Weapon, beginning a massive war involving slave armies, demigods, royal forces, and Main Family elders. 548 551

The Ōtsutsuki Council used the conflict to gather corpses for a Sacrificial Ritual and advance the God-Hunting Plan, while the Royal House pursued its own operations against the Maha Clan's Demon God Weapon. 613 615 619
