Background / History

Founding

Konoha was founded when the Senju and Uchiha clans ended their Warring States-era conflict and formed an alliance under Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara. Dozens of other clans—including the Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, Aburame, Inuzuka, Hyuga, Sarutobi, Shimura, and Hatake—later joined them in constructing the village. 229

Madara proposed the name Konoha, associating leaves with new life and Hashirama's Wood Release. Hashirama proposed the title Hokage for the village leader, associating it with Madara's Fire Release. 229

Decline after the founding era

Konoha endured the Second and Third Ninja World Wars after an earlier period of peace, nearly exhausting the village's strength during the Second War. 56

By the Ninja Academy generation, Ito Hirofumi publicly described Konoha as having declined from its former stature. He cited the deaths of Hatake Sakumo and Hizashi Hyuga, the Uchiha Clan massacre, and the disappearance of the Senju Clan as evidence that the village had lost the strength and ideals of its founding. 69

Fifth Hokage era
