Background / History

Konoha entered a period of peace after the war, though Hiruzen Sarutobi acknowledged that conflicts among its major clans and pressures from outside the village remained unresolved. Its overt military strength was limited in peacetime, while its hidden forces remained substantial. 4

During the Nine-Tails disaster, Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki died stopping the attack. Hiruzen took responsibility for their son Naruto, but concealed Naruto's parentage to protect him from Minato's enemies and used public resentment toward Naruto to redirect the village's grief and tensions. 4 7

After Naruto publicly revealed his lineage, many villagers reconsidered their treatment of him. Hiruzen responded by promising Naruto a new home and greater financial support, while villagers began inviting him to meals and acknowledging him as a hero's son. 9 15

The Chūnin Exams served as both a test for young shinobi and a public demonstration of each village's military strength; strong performances could attract more commissions from other nations. 85

Orochimaru later launched the Konoha Crush during the exams, posing as the Kazekage, taking Hiruzen hostage, and coordinating an invasion with Sound shinobi and giant summoned snakes. The attack killed Hiruzen and damaged the village, but Konoha's elite shinobi reorganized and restored order afterward. 113 126 127

Following Hiruzen's death, Danzō sought the Hokage position and used Root to obstruct Tsunade's return. Tsunade nevertheless returned to Konoha and accepted the Fifth Hokage position on a temporary basis. 127 141 144
