Background / History

Sasuke is the surviving Uchiha resident of Konoha’s abandoned Uchiha compound following the clan’s slaughter. He lives for revenge against his older brother, Itachi, and measures himself constantly against Itachi’s earlier accomplishments. Though praised as an academy genius, he fears he can never match his brother’s level. 20

Naruto finds Sasuke training alone and offers him “methods” to become stronger. Sasuke initially rejects the offer out of pride, but Naruto’s effortless destruction of a tree proves that Naruto possesses strength beyond him. Sasuke’s desperation for power ultimately outweighs his reluctance to learn from a former class dead-last. 20 21

Naruto’s first “lesson” is Jiraiya’s literary work rather than an actual training method. Sasuke reads it through the night expecting instructions, then angrily concludes that Naruto has deceived him. 21 27
