Background & History

Two years before meeting Uchiha Obito, Tsunade lost her lover, Dan Katō, during a mission. Arriving too late to save him and witnessing his bleeding left her with hemophobia; she spent the following years numbing her grief through alcohol and gambling. Obito encountered her drinking alone in a Konoha izakaya and approached her despite her initial hostility. 6

Obito later returned to Tsunade's home seemingly wounded after an assassination attempt. Although the blood initially triggered her phobia, her concern for him enabled her to suppress her fear and use the Mystical Palm Technique to treat his injury. The event made Obito an important person in her life and prompted Tsunade to confront the Third Hokage over the suspected attempt on his life. 11 12

As she learned of Konoha leadership's prejudice against the Uchiha, Tsunade became increasingly conflicted between her loyalty to the village founded by her grandfather and her bond with Obito.
