Background and History
Nanzhao Princess and Avenger
Bai Yuji is the orphaned princess of fallen Nanzhao. Her imperial brother was killed before her eyes, with Qin Muye’s father piercing his heart; the loss became the foundation of her vendetta against the Qin Family and Great Gan 17. She also bears responsibility for the impoverished Nanzhao Remnants, who cannot openly maintain businesses without risking exposure 23.
She initially joins the plot to abduct Qin Muye in order to obtain the Qin Family bloodline. When his near-death convinces her that someone within the operation may be trying to eliminate her as well, she disperses her subordinates to investigate rather than blindly proceed with the plan 2.
Bond with Qin Muye
Bai Yuji first tries to subdue Qin Muye with an aphrodisiac, then gives him a poison for which only she holds the cure 2. During their subsequent conflict, she uses the Luanfeng Gu to bind their lives together and returns to the capital under the cover identity of the physician who rescued him 3.
Although she treats Qin Muye’s depleted body with medicines and Gu insects, she remains divided between her revenge and her growing attachment to him. Her remorse becomes especially acute after the scheme against Qin Yanying harms innocent people and exposes the moral cost of the Nanzhao elders’ methods 37 46.
Nanzhao Leadership and Diplomacy
Bai Yuji increasingly asserts her authority over the Nanzhao elders, challenging the Great Elder’s attempts to direct major decisions without accountability 68. At the international conference, she argues that Great Gan is stronger than the other states assume, advocates a period of recovery rather than continued war, and demands support for Nanzhao’s restoration in exchange for her influence in the capital 76.
She openly rejects an Orchid Azure Kingdom envoy’s proposal to make her his consort for land, stabbing him and threatening his life unless he withdraws the insult 76. Her political efforts remain focused on securing trade, resources, and a viable future for her displaced people rather than pursuing revenge alone 77 78.
Breaking with the Old Path
Luo Qing’s death forces Bai Yuji to investigate the Bamboo Hat Man who killed him using the Feng Family’s Drifting Leaf Blade 81. She later learns that Qin Muye was Daoist Kongxu and that he had killed Luo Qing, a revelation that deeply destabilizes her trust in him 117 124.
After the Great Elder’s death, Bai Yuji tells the remaining Nanzhao Remnants that she has not forgotten revenge, but that her duty as princess also requires her people to live well 100. Emperor Li Hong later presents records and diplomatic letters that challenge her understanding of Nanzhao’s fall and implicate the Nanzhao royal family in the war. She accepts his offer to become Southern Parasol City’s market trade official, placing Nanzhao’s future above her personal wishes 159.
Appearance
Bai Yuji is a strikingly beautiful woman with fair, delicate features and a graceful figure. At very close range, she carries a natural jasmine-like fragrance 2 60.
- Slender fingers 2
- Fair, delicate brow and complexion 26
- Often conceals her identity beneath a bamboo hat 23
- Carries a soft sword at her waist 243
Personality
Bai Yuji is calculating, composed, and difficult to deceive. She recognizes when Qin Muye is attempting to sow discord, but acts on his warnings when they reveal genuine weaknesses in her organization 2. She can also be dryly humorous, including when recounting the memory of her brother catching her stealing from his alchemy room 17.
Her strongest conflict is between vengeance and responsibility. She can be ruthless when Nanzhao’s interests are threatened, yet she repeatedly balks at plans that endanger children, pregnant women, or ordinary civilians 37 38. Her compassion extends beyond her own people: she is distressed by Qingtiao’s domestic hardship and ensures that she has somewhere to turn if she is mistreated 66.
As leader of the remnants, Bai Yuji can be firm with elders who overstep her authority. She refuses to let Nanzhao’s restoration become an excuse for sacrificing her people or turning them into tools for others’ ambitions 68 100.
