The plaza in front of Beika's JR Station was not large. Given its location as a major transportation hub at the intersection of main roads, it could not afford to take up much space. There were only a few trees and several benches.
That sounded like it should have made searching easier, but when Conan entered the station plaza, he could not help feeling troubled.
There were simply too many pedestrians passing through. Without police assistance to seal the area off, nobody knew where the culprit might have placed the bomb—or whether some passerby might casually take it away.
Plastic explosives powerful enough to destroy a building, detonated in a crowd...
"Don't worry, little kid." Yusuke Kitagawa, a few steps behind him, crossed the pedestrian walkway with his hands tucked in his pockets. "Since the culprit said he'll detonate it after one o'clock, it's probably a timed bomb."
"...You've actually studied this sort of thing?" Conan looked up at him in surprise. Before he had even put his brain to work, he had been comforted by an ordinary person who seemed utterly out of the loop.
...Come to think of it, Yusuke Kitagawa looked skinny as though he had never had enough to eat, so why was he so tall? Talking to him was tiring.
Wearing three-centimeter height-increasing shoes, Yusuke Kitagawa nodded solemnly. "Isn't that obvious? If it weren't a timed bomb, why would he mention a time?"
"Even without a timer, he could use a remote device, right?" Conan refuted him first, then shook his head. "Still, you have a point."
Yusuke Kitagawa's judgment sounded less like deduction and more like an instinctive reaction from muscles directly wired to his brain, but he was not wrong.
If the culprit's objective matched what he had described over the phone, then
