Nature and Operation
The Spirit Realm exists within reality while remaining detached from it; only individuals it chooses may enter. Its selection process is unknown and its Role Cards can appear inside a person's body, be found by chance, or be obtained through an online link 9.
- Role Cards — A chosen individual receives a trial mission. Clearing it grants a profession, its innate skills, and access to further Spirit Realm missions 9 18.
- Advancement — Walkers gain levels by repeatedly undertaking missions and entering instances; Role Cards bestow the spiritual power and new skills received upon leveling up 9 914.
- Instances — Scenarios may be solo or multiplayer. Solo instances are considered especially dangerous, while multiplayer instances may be cooperative, confrontational, death-type, or non-death-type 9 254 1021 1047.
- Uniqueness of items — Spirit Realm items are extremely rare; each is unique and cannot be replicated 21.
- Mission contracts — Entry effectively forms a contract with the Spirit Realm. Completing main and side quests permits rewards and return to reality, while failure can result in death by contractual enforcement 994.
- Restrictions — Instances commonly prohibit non-Spirit Realm items from being brought inside 254 1021.
Moral Value
Moral Value is a causality-based restraint imposed on Spirit Realm Walkers.
- New Walkers begin with 60 Moral Value 18.
- Falling below the threshold triggers punishment: the Spirit Realm exposes the Walker's location and issues an elimination mission against them 9.
- The system derives from the Merit List, a core causality-type item that records good and evil deeds as Merit Points 813.
- By the final conflict, the Merit List could erase Walkers whose Moral Value was below 60, though Moral Value itself eventually ceased to function as the impending war escalated 1021 951.
Structure
Regions
The Spirit Realm is divided into three major regions.
| Region | Known status |
|---|---|
| First District | Opened roughly twenty years before the Second District; its system was overseen by the Mother Goddess, whose authority shaped its themes of gestation and reproduction 435 994 |
| Second District | Associated with the modern emergence of Spirit Realm Walkers in 1912; its construction and operation were overseen by Vast Heaven and the Nüwa Sovereign 435 994 |
| Third District | Long remained unopened; governed by sacrifice-oriented laws tied to the God of Fate before eventually opening after the final conflict 435 994 1040 |
Walkers from different regions ordinarily cannot meet one another inside dungeons, even though organizations from different regions may cooperate in reality 127.
Worlds and Instances
The Spirit Realm appears as a vast universe in which individual dungeons resemble stars orbiting the Lunar Moon and the Blazing Sun 798.
- Stars calculate, generate, and maintain dungeon worlds; their function includes data processing and preventing flaws 994.
- Lunar Moon conceals the Spirit Realm from the gods and sustains yin forces within its worlds 994.
- Sun suppresses invaders and eliminates corruption; the Merit List is only one of its lesser functions 994.
- Five Elements provide the foundational stability of Spirit Realm worlds, while other authorities govern functions such as life, space, trade, disasters, punishment, desire, and creation 799 994.
- The entire human world is itself a Spirit Realm instance. Earth is protected within the system, meaning hostile gods must invade the Spirit Realm in order to interfere with it 996.
History
In ancient times, practitioners cultivated directly through the spiritual energy of heaven and earth. They had no attribute panels, Role Cards, or formal instances, and followed independent inheritances rather than the Spirit Realm's rules 435.
As spiritual energy diminished, each era's practitioners grew weaker. By the late Ming dynasty, spiritual energy had dried up completely, ancient practitioners died out, and their inheritances were severed 435. Zhuanxu's Severing Earth from Heaven sealed the Spirit Realm to prevent evil gods from corrupting the world, but also initiated the Age of Dharma Decline 995.
The modern Spirit Realm emerged in the Second District in 1912, after 276 years without ancient practitioners. Early Walkers faced extremely high mortality because no established guides or system knowledge existed 435. During wartime, many were punished by Moral Value for killing ordinary enemy soldiers, allowing more developed foreign Walkers to hunt them for rewards 435.
Origin and Purpose
The Spirit Realm was created in ancient times by Vast Heaven, the Nüwa Sovereign, the Mother Goddess, and the God of Fate, using the divine power of numerous gods as components 994.
It is fundamentally a divine artifact assembled from godheads rather than a naturally occurring supernatural phenomenon 994. Its three core origins are the sun, moon, and stars 994.
Its purposes are:
- Revive powerful yang gods to resist the destructive yin gods 994.
- Select and cultivate administrators capable of wielding Spirit Realm authority 642 994.
- Support a human becoming the embodiment of the universe, allowing the universe to reject its destined destruction and preserve life 994.
The conflict between Orderly and Evil factions originates from this purpose. The Orderly side seeks to produce administrators and alter the universe's fate, while invading evil gods seek to prevent administrators from being born and preserve the universe's destructive cycle 994.
Ancient Spirit Realms
Ancient “Spirit Realms” were heavenly grottoes and blessed lands opened by administrators to give cultivators places for trials. Some were later reclaimed and converted into modern instances, while others remained in the world 996.
Modern mechanics—including Role Cards, classes, panels, and structured advancement—were added after the Spirit Realm reappeared 996.
Malfunctions and Bugs
The Spirit Realm was believed incapable of malfunctioning until the Lunar Moon's corruption disrupted its operation. During the incident, Slaughter Dungeons failed to open, notifications repeated indefinitely, and instances were threatened with concealment 798 799.
The five alliance leaders countered the disruption by invoking the Five Elements' foundational authority, freezing the affected dungeon-stars against the Lunar Moon's pull 799.
Later, Vast Heaven explained that the stars serve as the Spirit Realm's computational system. Since the Star Lord's birth, their computational capacity had declined, causing increasingly frequent instance bugs 994.
Administrative Authority
Demigods possess portions of the Spirit Realm's administrative authority, and becoming an administrator is the ultimate destination of a Spirit Realm Walker 642.
After becoming Sun Lord, Zhang Yuanqing gained authority over major functions of the Spirit Realm:
- Control of Moral Value and punishment for those lacking virtue.
- Observation of every dungeon's condition.
- The ability to format—destroy—dungeons.
- Suppression or cancellation of other administrators' authority.
- Partial authority over the Lunar Moon and stars, including future oversight of dungeon generation, Walker data, yin forces, and hidden quests 1040.
Other demigod administrators received authority corresponding to their domains. The Five Elements alliance leaders became foundational stabilizers of Spirit Realm worlds, while Musicians gained the authority to create NPCs within balanced limits 1040.
