A Share of the Spoils

Out of respect for the Hawaiian royal family, Friedrich chose to go to the palace for an audience.

In reality, Kamehameha III had waited outside the Austrian military's temporary camp for a long time, only to be politely turned away by Austrian diplomats.

When Friedrich's party arrived before the Hawaiian palace, Kamehameha III and his queen had already been waiting at the entrance for quite some time.

Following a brief yet grand ceremony, Friedrich entered the palace, accompanied by a squad of guards and two diplomats.

First came the routine establishment of diplomatic relations, after which Friedrich got straight to the point regarding the Fannar affair.

"The thirty-year land development agreement signed between our merchants and your subjects was only two years into its term when your subjects sublet the land to others and refused to pay compensation. I hope you will exercise the power in your hands justly."

Kamehameha III was stunned; he had not expected the commoners of his country to be so bold. They had dared to set a trap for people he himself did not dare to offend.

"How about this? To show my friendship toward the Austrian Empire, I, Kamehameha III, formally grant your country extraterritorial rights on Hawaiian soil. How does that sound?"

Friedrich and the other two diplomats were taken aback. They had actually devised a host of methods to force compliance, but it seemed the other party was well-versed in such matters and willing to cooperate, which would save them quite a bit of trouble.

The entire negotiation was within Franz's plan: give a slap, then offer a sweet treat; only then could a virtuous cycle be formed.

The Austrian Empire immediately proposed the development of Pearl Bay; Pearl Harbor was located on Oahu Island and named for its abundance of pearls.
