Friedrich was naturally furious when he learned that his home base had been raided. He knew that not only was his fiancée on the ship, but also the important "personage" Franz had entrusted to his escort; he had no desire to deal with those Japanese.

The suspects included the acting First Officer Jifalu, the duty sentry commander, and the ship's doctor. Jifalu could be ruled out immediately, as he had been cowering in his cabin locker throughout the incident, while the sentry commander had been in the head at the bow due to an upset stomach.
