The Black Ship Arrives (Part 1)

1845, Edo Castle.

Inside a magnificent Japanese-style palace, a gentle breeze brushed against wind chimes, creating a crisp, melodic sound as beautiful cherry blossoms drifted down.

Sitting cross-legged on the tatami mats was Abe Masahiro, the Chief Senior Councilor of the Shogunate and one of the most powerful men in the country.

Becoming the Chief Senior Councilor at the mere age of twenty-seven was an unprecedented feat in the history of the Edo Shogunate.

Yet, at this moment, Abe Masahiro felt none of the high spirits of a "youthful success." He had no heart to listen to the pleasant chiming of the bells, and the falling cherry blossoms only filled him with an inexplicable sense of sorrow.

Within the Shogunate, Abe Masahiro was known as the "Gourd Catfish," a testament to the high expectations placed upon him.

Legend held that a giant catfish carried the Japanese islands on its back; whenever it moved, an earthquake would occur, so the god Ebisu used a gourd to pin the creature down.

Beyond its connotations of destruction and ruin, the catfish also symbolized revival and reform, earning it the title of the "Catfish of Social Transformation."

As for the gourd, it had long been associated with the warding off of illness and disaster in Izumo, thus the "Gourd Catfish" came to represent the turning of misfortune into luck and the dissipation of calamity.

However, as Chief Senior Councilor, Abe Masahiro knew better than anyone that the Shogunate was already a setting sun. Taxes and corvée labor had reached an unbearable peak, yet they were still insufficient to pay off the debts owed to the merchants.

The weakness of the central government left all of Japan in turmoil, with ambitious men constantly gaining power through foreign smuggling and the further exploitation of their subjects.
