Brzezina soon arrived at the entrance of a weapons shop with a crowd of people. With the city in such chaos, this should have been the best time of year for business.
But the customers spotted the large group approaching from far away and scattered like startled birds and beasts. The shopkeeper hurried to shut the door and hide from these harbingers of doom, but the young man at the head of the group took three steps in two and stopped him.

The weapons shop owner shook his head so violently he nearly rattled it off, then nodded frantically over and over.
Brzezina felt a little helpless, but put on a crafty smile and asked,
"Do you love your country?"
"I do! I'm Polish, and I love Poland!" The shopkeeper hurriedly tried to prove his innocence. Brzezina nodded in satisfaction and continued,
"Patriot, the territory of our great motherland, Poland, is being trampled underfoot by three evil nations: Russia, Prussia, and Austria. Shouldn't you do something for your motherland?"
