Background / History
Early life and the Senju conflict
Madara was raised as Uchiha Tajima’s eldest son and Izuna’s older brother. During the Uchiha–Senju conflict, he developed a strong foundation in swordsmanship and precise Fire Style, while the casualties around him made him increasingly serious and protective of Izuna. 424
At a secluded river near the border, Madara secretly met Hashirama Senju. The two trained together and discussed ending the clans’ bloodshed by creating a peaceful village for children. Their friendship collapsed after Tajima and Butsuma discovered them; Madara ultimately declared that the Uchiha and Senju could no longer be friends. 424 425 426
Madara awakened the Sharingan while shielding Izuna from Butsuma’s attack. He responded by intensifying his training, studying Hashirama’s movements and resolving to become powerful enough to protect his brother. 426
After Tajima and Butsuma killed one another, Madara and Izuna awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan through grief and rage. Madara later rejected Hashirama’s proposal for a full Uchiha–Senju union, arguing that entrenched hatred and distrust of Tobirama made peace untenable. 430 437 438
Konoha and Hashirama
In another account of his youth, Madara and Izuna were assigned by their great-grandfather Manji to help the defecting Senju brothers settle in Konoha. Madara initially treated Hashirama coldly, but became interested after learning that Hashirama sought to protect his clan and end the world’s chaos. 180
The two discovered that they had been long-time pen pals: Madara wrote as Wang Wenwang, while Hashirama used Wang Wenwen and Vegetative Person. Their shared ideals made them close despite their clans’ history. 181
Madara and Izuna later favored using Konoha’s military strength to unify the Ninja World, even proposing an invasion of the Land of Whirlpools. Manji rejected the plan in favor of stabilizing Konoha and pursuing diplomacy. 188
Hokage and the First Great Ninja War
After Hashirama stepped down, Madara became Hokage and convened a Five Kage Summit to impose order on the Ninja World. His approach was openly hegemonic: he sought to use Konoha’s power to restrain other nations, while Tobirama often acted as his cautious counterweight. 200 202
Madara and Tobirama pushed for direct war against Iwagakure, planning to use Flying Thunder God to strike behind enemy lines. As the conflict expanded into a prolonged multi-front war, Madara insisted that conquest would create permanent peace, even as Konoha’s casualties and anti-war sentiment mounted. 207 215
The strain of Mangekyō use left Madara increasingly vulnerable to blindness. He eventually stopped relying on his ocular power to preserve his sight. 215 219
Rinnegan and the Demonic Statue
Madara’s eyes later evolved into the Rinnegan. He interpreted the transformation as a possible reaction between his own power and Hashirama’s cells. 226
Using a stone tablet, Madara performed the required hand seals and summoned what he believed to be the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. The statue was actually a counterfeit created by Manji, who planted White Zetsu within it to watch Madara’s group. 230
Madara also sought a suitable Uzumaki child to inherit the Rinnegan, believing the clan’s exceptional chakra reserves and vitality might withstand the eyes’ destructive backlash. 235
Appearance
Madara is depicted as a black-haired Uchiha with scarlet Sharingan eyes. His features grow sharper and more hardened over years of war, reflecting his shift from a burdened youth into the clan’s central military figure. 424 439
- Black hair and crimson ocular patterns when his dōjutsu is active. 426 443
- Commonly carries a ninja blade in combat. 426
- Uses a Gunbai in his clash with Hashirama. 438
Personality
Madara initially presents himself as aloof, blunt, and difficult to approach. Beneath that reserve, he is deeply responsive to people who share his desire to end the chaos consuming their clans; Hashirama’s sincerity quickly earned his interest and respect. 180 181
His strongest attachment is to Izuna. Madara’s Sharingan awakening, relentless training, and later political choices are repeatedly tied to his determination that no one should harm his younger brother. 426 427 437
As a leader, Madara favors strength, decisive action, and security achieved through dominance. He comes to believe that war can end war permanently, a conviction that drives him to continue the First Great Ninja War despite Hashirama’s objections and Konoha’s suffering. 188 215
