Background / History

Ten years before the conflict at Ryudou Temple, Shirou was caught in a catastrophic disaster and left near death. Kiritsugu Emiya rescued him, adopted him, and taught him the basics of magecraft. Following Kiritsugu’s death, Shirou continued practicing every day despite having little formal instruction. 25

His early training was dangerously flawed: rather than activating established Magic Circuits, he repeatedly created circuits through his ordinary nerves. Though he possesses twenty-seven circuits, he shut them down after each session, forcing himself to recreate them whenever he used magecraft. Rin later helped him gradually correct this practice. 60

During the Holy Grail War, Shirou becomes Saber's Master and allies with Rin Tohsaka against Caster and Assassin. His focus is consistently on ending the war quickly and preventing Fuyuki’s residents from becoming sacrifices to it. 20 22

Personality

Shirou is defined by an uncompromising desire to protect others. At school, he is known as the “Brownie of Homurahara Academy,” someone who will help whenever sincerely asked; Kaoru Sakura observes that he appears to value other people more than himself. 11

He rejects Archer’s proposal to tolerate Caster’s victims for a future tactical advantage, refusing to accept victory purchased with civilian lives. His ideal is to become an “ally of justice” like Kiritsugu, even when he recognizes that he lacks the strength to accomplish it. 21 53

Shirou is determined but not reckless about his limitations. He asks Sasuke to intervene only if he and Rin face mortal danger, viewing the Matou investigation as an opportunity to become less dependent on overwhelming outside protection. 56 His determination is repeatedly tempered by the realization of the vast gulf between his abilities and Sasuke’s. 53 61 76

Holy Grail War

Shirou first vouches for Rin when Sasuke hesitates to trust her after Kaoru Sakura is injured. He soon becomes involved in the Holy Grail War as Saber's Master and joins Rin and Sasuke’s operation against Caster and Assassin at Ryudou Temple. 2 20 22

At Ryudou Temple, Shirou supports Saber and Rin against Caster’s barrier and Dragon Tooth Skeleton forces. He is prepared to expend a Command Spell to let Saber unleash her Noble Phantasm, but Sasuke’s intervention prevents that immediate necessity. 25 26 27

When the Grail’s hole opens, Shirou gives Saber his final Command Spell so she can use Excalibur to destroy it, ending the war at the cost of their contract. 46

Matou Family Investigation
