Background / History

Taking in Shen Ye

During the women's-bathhouse incident, Tsunade stopped Uchiha Fugaku from intimidating Shen Ye and personally questioned the boy rather than letting the crowd punish him 2. Learning that Shen Ye had no home, she saw him as someone like her younger brother and offered him a place in her home, promising to explain his situation to the Third Hokage and help him enter the Ninja Academy 3.

She became Shen Ye's guardian and elder-sister figure. She routinely brought him home, prepared meals for him, treated his injuries, and later continued to live with him 8 48 103 289.

Travels and Shizune

Tsunade took Shen Ye through civilian casinos, where she lost all the money she had brought and intended to borrow more to continue gambling 69. Shizune revealed that she had previously traveled with Tsunade and had made her promise never to gamble in a particular village again after Tsunade reacted violently to being cheated there 70.

Tsunade later arranged for Shizune to return to her side in Konoha 71.

Orochimaru's Defection

When Orochimaru admitted to experimenting on Konoha ninja, Tsunade struggled with her feelings toward her former comrade but chose to fight him. She protected Shizune by ordering her to evacuate Shen Ye and the other youths before confronting Orochimaru and Manda 97 98.

She summoned a slug to attack Manda and pursued Orochimaru with the Heaven Kick of Pain after his attempt to leave 98 99.

Instructor and Mentor

Tsunade taught Shen Ye the forbidden Strength of a Hundred Technique, despite the training leaving him chakra-depleted for two days 104. She also served as the instructor of a taijutsu-focused class comprising Might Duy, Hizashi Hyuga, and Hatake Sakumo 105 152.

Before departing for a dangerous border mission, she entrusted Shen Ye with the technique she had taught him and told him to use it only at a critical moment—and to return alive 105. She continued treating him before missions and left him her own supply of medicinal liniment despite needing it herself 115.

While Jiraiya was incapacitated, Tsunade took over the training of Shen Ye's team and combined them with her Third Class 150 152.
