Background / History

Jiraiya is a Konoha ninja counted among the legendary Sannin and regarded as a pinnacle of the village's jōnin combat strength. He repeatedly refuses Sarutobi Hiruzen's invitations to succeed him as Hokage, preferring to travel and pursue his own goal of world peace. 148 247

He is a longtime teammate of Tsunade and Orochimaru. Orochimaru's defection places Jiraiya in direct conflict with his former comrade; although Jiraiya is willing to fight him to protect Konoha, he repeatedly struggles to kill him outright. 97 99 369

Jiraiya becomes involved with Shen Ye after Shen Ye shifts the women's-bathhouse peeping accusation onto him. Though Jiraiya admits he has peeked before, he initially bears the punishment and later subjects Shen Ye to a loyalty test amid suspicions that Shen Ye may be a spy. 2 8 20

Appearance

Jiraiya is a middle-aged man with white hair that falls to his shoulders. He commonly wears robes and wooden sandals; in Sage Mode, he fights with the two Great Toad Sages, Fukasaku and Shima, positioned on his shoulders. 109 110 247 297

  • Long white hair, which he weaponizes through hair-based ninjutsu. 117 369
  • Carries a large scroll during combat. 34
  • Uses wooden sandals even while walking on water. 118
  • Sage Mode manifests visible markings around his eyes and cheeks. 369

Personality

Jiraiya is playful, boastful, and frequently shameless. He writes Icha Icha Paradise, peeps at women's bathhouses as supposed “research,” and is widely known in Konoha as the Pervy Sage. 8 250 He also has an unpredictable lifestyle, often traveling outside the village for extended periods. 247 250

Behind that behavior, he is a serious Konoha loyalist. He tests Shen Ye because village security takes priority over personal trust, intervenes when Orochimaru targets Shen Ye, and treats the younger generation as Konoha's future. 20 99 He is protective of his students, though his concern can cloud his judgment when Shen Ye is injured. 125 300

As a teacher, Jiraiya combines teasing and harsh practical exercises with genuine patience. He insists that students master chakra control and fundamentals before pursuing senjutsu or stronger techniques. 116 118 121
