Konoha service

Orochimaru earned a fearsome reputation during the Second Shinobi World War and became one of Konoha's Sannin. The Third Hokage regarded him as his preferred successor for the Fourth Hokage position, valuing both his battlefield record and his ability to secure political gains for the village. 62 67

Before his defection, Orochimaru assessed Gong Yi's potential personally, taking note of the boy's physical training, composure, and stated desire to control his own destiny. Though he did not take Gong Yi as a disciple at the time, he remembered him and later provided Ninjutsu guidance and access to his private library. 39 129

After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru encountered Gong Yi in Kirigakure and was alarmed to discover that Gong Yi had mastered Wood Style, Sage Mode, Gold Style, and other abilities. He also showed interest in Kimimaro's Shikotsumyaku, though Gong Yi warned that Kimimaro's suspected Kekkei Genkai Disease made him unsuitable as a vessel. 250

Orochimaru later joined the Akatsuki and worked alongside Uchiha Itachi. His fixation on Itachi's Sharingan led him to attack Itachi, but Itachi trapped him in ocular Genjutsu, severed one of his arms, and spared him only because of Orochimaru's arrangement with Gong Yi. Orochimaru approached the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, and arranged a joint attack on Konoha during the Chunin Exams. He intended from the outset to exploit Sunagakure rather than serve it. 396 398

He betrayed Rasa in a remote canyon, declaring his intent to kill the Kazekage and assume his identity so the plan could continue. Rasa was later confirmed to have been assassinated by Orochimaru. 410 436
