Background / History
Konoha service
Orochimaru earned a fearsome reputation during the Second Shinobi World War and became one of Konoha's Sannin. The Third Hokage regarded him as his preferred successor for the Fourth Hokage position, valuing both his battlefield record and his ability to secure political gains for the village. 62 67
Before his defection, Orochimaru assessed Gong Yi's potential personally, taking note of the boy's physical training, composure, and stated desire to control his own destiny. Though he did not take Gong Yi as a disciple at the time, he remembered him and later provided Ninjutsu guidance and access to his private library. 39 129
He led the squad that renewed Konoha's peace treaty with Sunagakure, then commanded more than seven hundred Konoha shinobi in the war against Sunagakure. He distributed assignments only after the army was underway to prevent spies from exposing the battle plan. 56 76
As commander, Orochimaru backed Gong Yi's appointment as head of the Medical Unit. He cited Gong Yi's treatment of more than one hundred wounded shinobi without a single death from their injuries to silence objections from Konoha's clan representatives. 87 89
Forbidden research and defection
Orochimaru maintained secret laboratories containing imprisoned ninja, experimental tables, and human test subjects. His work included implanting Hashirama Cells into orphaned children, whom he regarded as expendable tools for verifying cell-fusion hypotheses. 124 130 132
He collaborated with Danzō on Hashirama Cell research and later formed a research partnership with Gong Yi. Their cooperation included examining cell samples, exchanging findings, and making a blood contract tied to their research arrangement. 127 130 169
Orochimaru completed his first Living Corpse Reincarnation, transferring his consciousness into a new body in pursuit of immortality. 146
Danzō ultimately exposed Orochimaru's experiments to remove him as a rival for the Hokage position. Pursued by the Third Hokage, Anbu, and Jiraiya, Orochimaru defeated Jiraiya through superior tactical adaptation, severed his Konoha headband, and abandoned the village. 170
Missing-nin activities
After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru encountered Gong Yi in Kirigakure and was alarmed to discover that Gong Yi had mastered Wood Style, Sage Mode, Gold Style, and other abilities. He also showed interest in Kimimaro's Shikotsumyaku, though Gong Yi warned that Kimimaro's suspected Kekkei Genkai Disease made him unsuitable as a vessel. 250
Orochimaru later joined the Akatsuki and worked alongside Uchiha Itachi. His fixation on Itachi's Sharingan led him to attack Itachi, but Itachi trapped him in ocular Genjutsu, severed one of his arms, and spared him only because of Orochimaru's arrangement with Gong Yi. Orochimaru then left the organization. 331 342
Seeking Sharingan for further research, he traded his research records and hypotheses on Impure World Reincarnation to Gong Yi in exchange for a pair of Sharingan. 345
Konoha Crush Plan
Orochimaru approached the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, and arranged a joint attack on Konoha during the Chunin Exams. He intended from the outset to exploit Sunagakure rather than serve it. 396 398
He betrayed Rasa in a remote canyon, declaring his intent to kill the Kazekage and assume his identity so the plan could continue. Rasa was later confirmed to have been assassinated by Orochimaru. 410 436
During the assault on Konoha, Orochimaru attempted to claim Sasuke Uchiha's Sharingan but withdrew when Kimimaro intervened on Gong Yi's orders. His clash with Hiruzen Sarutobi ended with the Dead Demon Consuming Seal affecting his hands, leaving him unable to use them normally. 408 425 463
Appearance
Orochimaru is a lean, elongated man with pale skin, an unsettling smile, and predatory slit pupils. Before his first reincarnation, he wore a pale yellow kimono; during his time in Akatsuki, he wore the organization’s black, red-clouded cloak. 39 331
- Golden, snake-like vertical pupils. 39 331
- Purple eyeshadow extending along the sides of his nose. 331
- Can alter his body unnaturally, including extending his neck and transforming an arm into a massive serpent. 342 408
- His original body possessed near-peak Ninjutsu compatibility and chakra control; later host bodies restricted him despite granting immortality. 39
Personality
Orochimaru is driven by an absolute desire for knowledge, power, and immortality. He judges people primarily by their usefulness: he tolerates spies, unstable allies, and potential traitors if they provide research value or useful resources. 124
His research has made him profoundly callous. He dismisses the deaths of child test subjects and regards human experimentation as an acceptable cost for progress. 130 132
In battle and politics, Orochimaru is calculating, adaptable, and manipulative. He studies opponents quickly, uses varied techniques to disrupt their rhythm, and abandons alliances when they cease to benefit him. However, his obsession with rare abilities—particularly the Sharingan—can make him gamble against stronger opponents. 170 342 406
