Background / History
East Sun Sect is Dongyang Prefecture's foremost martial sect, with enough historical influence that it may use the prefecture's name. The sect has produced eleven Sha Refining Martial Sect Masters, a record unmatched elsewhere in the prefecture. 104 115
The sect's founding patriarch was True Person Ziyin. The founders of its other ten veins were likewise Sha Refining Martial Sect Masters. 76 Its territory encompasses the six-hundred-li Lingbi Mountain range, although its principal grounds occupy only a portion of that land. 73 74
Its inheritance is organized as the Nine Peaks and Eleven Veins. Gathering Cloud Peak houses most third-generation disciples, while individual peaks retain their own lineages, personnel, resources, and political interests. 72 74 82
Grounds and Facilities
East Sun Sect stands on Lingbi Mountain, roughly forty li north of Dongyang Prefecture City. Visitors pass through monumental archways bearing inscriptions including “East Sun Sect,” “Lingbi Blessed Land,” and “Martial Dao Reaches Divinity.” 72
- Gathering Cloud Peak — Residence and cultivation site for most third-generation disciples; visiting students may train there for three years under formal-disciple standards. 72
- Welcoming Guest Peak — Receives visiting sects and hosted the Disciple Recruitment Ceremony. 86 104
- Heavenly Pillar Peak — Contains higher-level Scripture and Martial Arts Pavilions with stricter formations and access controls. 92 94
- Heart Inquiry Peak — Site of the Law Enforcement Hall; its prison is reached through guarded checkpoints, iron gates, and a hazardous chain bridge. 85
- Great Harmony Peak — Where the damaged Great Harmony Sword is nurtured. 103
- Sword Washing Peak — Han Lingxiao's peak and the location of its Heaven-rank martial skill. 96 97
- Scripture Repository Pavilion — Protected by a permanent formation; ordinary access provides complete Force Refining material, while higher sections of many techniques are withheld. 74
- Martial Arts Pavilion — An eight-floor repository categorized by weapon arts, unarmed arts, movement techniques, defense, hidden weapons, and secret techniques. Earth- and Heaven-tier manuals are individually sealed by formations. 94 95
Organization and Discipline
Leadership
- Yunling Zi — Sect Master and a late-stage Qi Refining martial artist. He entered seclusion with Han Lingxiao and Yunxia Zi to restore the Great Harmony Sword. 11 103
- Yunhuizi — Mid-stage Qi Refining elder; temporarily presided over sect affairs during Yunling Zi's seclusion. 11 103
- Han Lingxiao — Peak Master and Lu Cheng's master; oversees Sword Washing Peak. 90 96
- Xu Zhao — Gathering Cloud Peak Master; later identified by Ge Long as the alleged mastermind behind a plot against the sect. 82 120
- Yuncheng Zi — Heart Inquiry Peak Master; his actions against the Martial Suppression Army intensified the sect's conflict with the imperial authorities. 103 112 118
Admission and Benefits
- Annual tuition costs two thousand taels of silver, excluding food, lodging, clothing, and other necessities. 73
- Cultivators who fail to reach Body Refining before age thirty must leave the mountain; those who do not attain late Body Refining before fifty lose further sect benefits. 109
- A peak master's disciple receives free food and lodging, a stipend, monthly Spirit Awakening Powder, cultivation medicines, and broader access to sect techniques. 92
- The sect's low-grade Heaven-tier Purple Qi Spirit Guiding Art is normally restricted to the Sect Master and disciples of Qi Refining elders, though a peak master's disciple may receive permission to cultivate it. 71 74 92
Cultivation Inheritance
| Art / Resource | Grade / Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Purple Qi Spirit Guiding Art | Low-grade Heaven tier cultivation art | The sect-defending art; access is tightly restricted. 71 74 |
| Lesser Longevity Art | High-grade Earth tier cultivation art | An inheritance associated with improved prospects of reaching Sha Refining. 74 76 |
| Great Harmony Primordial Qi Guide | Earth-tier cultivation art | Specializes in harmonizing yin and yang; used in nurturing the Great Harmony Sword. 74 103 |
| Nine-Revolution Spirit Awakening Pill | Sect pill | Permanently increases a cultivator's absorption of heaven-and-earth primordial qi by thirty percent. 89 |
| Qi Condensation Pill | Breakthrough pill | Raises the chance of advancing from Body Refining to Qi Refining by ten percent. 11 |
Notable Assets
- Great Harmony Sword — An Earthsha Divine Weapon once wielded by former Sect Master Qu Guang. Its accumulated Killing Intent lets a Qi Refining wielder briefly exert half-step Earthsha power. It returned badly damaged after Qu Guang apparently died at the Five Provinces Battlefield. 103 115
- Heart Inquiry Hammer — An Earthsha Divine Weapon associated with Heart Inquiry Peak. Yuncheng Zi removed it without Yunhuizi's knowledge, and later events revealed it was being refined into a “Heart Inquiry Hammer” intended as a deadly weapon. 113 118 120
- Vermilion Feather Divine Ibis — The sect's divine bird; its body is said to be hard as iron and it can travel six hundred li in a day. Yunling Zi and three martial uncles rode it to the recruitment ceremony. 87
- Protective formations — The sect uses formations to secure its repositories and major peaks, with Heavenly Pillar Peak's defenses stronger than those on Gathering Cloud Peak. 74 94
External Relations
- Emerald Cloud Abbey — A subordinate sect that pays tribute to East Sun Sect. Yunhuizi offered it a five-year tribute exemption and three annual cultivation placements after reallocating its promised Qi Condensation Pill to Du Ruo. 11
- Long Wind Escort Agency — Received three East Sun Sect cultivation slots from Yunhuizi, intended to build closer ties with the sect. 11 19
- Martial Suppression Army — A rival authority within Dongyang Prefecture. Its conflict with Yuncheng Zi escalated after East Sun Sect disciples attacked the army camp and suffered heavy losses. 112 115
- Great Yun Dynasty — Tolerates the sect's regional dominance only while it fulfills military obligations at the Five Provinces Battlefield. 115
- Qingyang Sect — A visiting sect whose disciple clashed with Lu Cheng during East Sun Sect's recruitment celebrations. 88 89
- Vajra Temple — Participated in the sect's sparring event and contributed an Eight-Treasure Glazed Pill as a prize. 89
Five Provinces Battlefield Obligation
East Sun Sect's prestige carries a compulsory duty to guard the Five Provinces Battlefield, the entrance to the Yellow Sand Sea. The Great Yun Dynasty requires each sect to provide one Sha Refining expert; a sect without one may instead provide five Qi Refining martial artists or a Qi Refining martial artist wielding an Earthsha Divine Weapon. Refusal means disbandment, sealing the mountain, or war with the dynasty. 115
The sect's unusually short succession of Sect Masters—roughly one every twenty years—is tied to this obligation. Many Body Refining perfection experts deliberately avoid Qi Refining because advancement may force them into battlefield service. 105 115
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruitment of Du Ruo
Yunhuizi arrived at Long Wind Escort Agency, recognized Du Ruo as a Human Hero, and accepted her as his disciple. He gave her a Qi Condensation Pill and stated that she could potentially reach Qi Refining within three years. 11
Yunhuizi also granted cultivation placements to Emerald Cloud Abbey and Long Wind Escort Agency, extending East Sun Sect's influence over Yangcheng County's martial factions. 11
Lu Cheng's Arrival
Lu Cheng reached Lingbi Mountain with Emerald Cloud Abbey's delegation and was assigned to Gathering Cloud Peak. Though not initially admitted as a formal disciple, he was to receive formal-disciple-standard training for three years. 72
He encountered the sect's costly tuition system, restricted technique access, internal hierarchy, and political maneuvering among its peaks. 73 74 82 83
Lu Cheng Becomes Han Lingxiao's Disciple
During the Disciple Recruitment Ceremony's sparring competition, Lu Cheng defeated all challengers and won the Nine-Revolution Spirit Awakening Pill. Han Lingxiao then accepted him as a disciple, raising his rank and granting access to Heavenly Pillar Peak's resources. 89 90 92
The Great Harmony Sword Crisis
The damaged Great Harmony Sword returned to the sect, signaling the likely death of former Sect Master Qu Guang at the Five Provinces Battlefield. Yunling Zi ordered the sword's restoration, strengthened sect defenses, and appointed Yunhuizi to manage the sect in his absence. 103
The crisis exposed tension between leaders willing to shoulder the battlefield duty and those seeking to avoid it by forcing advancement upon other elders or relying on younger disciples. 103 115
Internal Conflict and Conspiracy
Yuncheng Zi's attack on the Martial Suppression Army camp worsened the sect's relationship with the imperial military. His attempt to use the Heart Inquiry Hammer without collective approval further revealed divisions among the peaks. 112 113 118
Ge Long later identified Xu Zhao as the alleged mastermind behind a plan to forge the Heart Inquiry Hammer into a deadly weapon, kill Yunhuizi, lure in Martial Suppression Army commanders, and provoke the imperial court into destroying East Sun Sect. 120
Trivia
- East Sun Sect's historical records describe the territory as already controlling all of Lingbi Mountain by the sect's three-hundredth year, when it had only four peaks and four veins. 76
- The sect's many disciples and vast territory make its administrators unable to manage all affairs directly; Gathering Cloud Peak relies heavily on eight Deacon Elders and twenty Deacon Disciples. 82
- Despite its prestige, internal bullying and factional favoritism have driven some former disciples to leave the mountain with deep resentment. 109
