None of the three had expected this. In all the intelligence they had gathered before, there had not been a single mention of them knowing how to use ninjutsu, because they were completely incompatible with the ninjutsu system!

Both their previous missions and Shiro's intelligence had made that point clear, but the truth now stood right before their eyes: a Dragon Kind had used Earth Release to ambush and kill the utterly exhausted Soji!

The sharp bone spike on its wing pierced through Soji's heart without the slightest resistance, lifting him up whole. Even as Soji was raised into the air, disbelief filled his eyes until the moment he died.

"Pfft—" As the light faded from Soji's eyes, the Wyvern flicked its wing and tossed him to the ground like a torn sack. Then it stared at Shisui, whose aura was slowly rising, and revealed a cruel smile.

On this side, the instant Soji's heart was pierced through, Shisui froze in place. Memories flashed again and again through his mind, and the tomoe in his eyes began spinning faster and faster.

Only when the sound of Soji being thrown to the ground reached him did Shisui wake from his memories. Looking at the figure lying there, Shisui wished more than anything that this was only an illusion cast by the enemy.
