Background / History
Angron is a Primarch from another world who arrived in the current Imperium by coincidence. Unlike the Angron known by surviving loyalists of this universe, he never betrayed humanity, does not bear the Butcher’s Nails, and is not the tyrant remembered from Isstvan III. He considers concealing this distinction from the loyalist survivors of the World Eaters to be a further betrayal of men who endured ten thousand years of pain and suspicion. 409 1007
He was brought from the void to Terra by He Shenyan, then accompanied the Mage across worlds to a region near the Great Rift. There, he encountered a Chaos World Eaters warband and was horrified by the Legion’s degeneration into slaveholding butchers. He chose to take responsibility for them, beginning with Givadoron, a World Eater who had retained his lucidity despite the Butcher’s Nails. 355 358
The Nucerian Angron
Through an illusion arranged by He Shenyan, Angron witnessed the life of this universe’s original Angron. That Primarch was found on Nuceria amid alien corpses, enslaved as a child, and forced to survive an arena battle in which several hundred slaves killed one another. He was named Angron Thal’kr and made property of the Thal’kr family. 347 355
The original Angron became the arena’s “Unbeaten,” but the Butcher’s Nails were implanted after he refused an order to kill Oenomaus, the elderly gladiator he regarded as a father. Driven into a frenzy by the Nails, he killed Oenomaus, then led a slave revolt that destroyed the Desh’ea Arena and fled into the mountains. 347
When the High Riders surrounded the starving rebels, the Emperor appeared and offered the original Angron a Legion in exchange for his allegiance. Angron refused to abandon his fellow slaves; the Emperor removed him from Nuceria anyway, leaving the rebellion to be massacred. The original Angron later fell to Chaos and became a monster of Khorne. 356
Appearance
Angron is an immense, powerfully built Primarch whose size and physical presence are immediately intimidating even to Astartes. He normally wears austere red-and-black war plate, but has also fought bare-chested or with only improvised weapons. 358 371
- Broad, heavily muscled physique capable of creating a miniature earthquake with a punch. 358
- Unlike the Angron native to this universe, he has no Butcher’s Nails or the cranial cables associated with them. 409
- His standard armor has scarlet lenses, a red cloak, and a double-headed eagle on the chest. 371
- Carries a massive Lightning Axe, often surrounded by golden lightning. 371 702
- His armor can be wreathed in blood mist during battle. 700 707
Personality
Angron is direct, impatient, and intensely drawn to battle. He openly resents being excluded from combat, considers himself the strongest available warrior, and is willing to challenge enemies alone when he believes it necessary. His confidence can become recklessness, particularly when he refuses armor or relies on an assumed victory. 671 672 699
Despite his brutality, Angron possesses a firm moral hatred of slavery and refuses to treat ordinary humans as disposable. He abolished slavery on his own Nuceria, was enraged to find slaves aboard the corrupted World Eaters vessel, and deliberately tempered his fury so as not to frighten Kale, an innocent civilian. 355 358 705
He respects courage, personal choice, and warriors who accept responsibility. He initially distrusted the Crimson Blades’ Third Company, but sincerely apologized after recognizing their resolve. His treatment of Givadoron is harsh but restorative: Angron condemns his self-destructive despair while insisting that he continue serving rather than seek death. 363 382
Angron is also notably protective of He Shenyan. He repeatedly challenges the Mage’s self-endangering decisions, regards him as a vital part of humanity’s future, and strongly opposes his plan to become a god. 374 375 700
