"Ichinose Honami, is there something you need my help with?" Watanabe Hayabara's voice carried a hint of a smile, his gaze fixed on her reddening earlobes.
Ichinose Honami seemed startled by the question, her shoulders giving a slight shudder as she realized she had been staring at him for a full half-minute. She hurriedly lowered her head, her eyes locking onto her own polished black leather shoes. "Um..." Her voice trailed off, thin as a fraying thread.
The girl's cheeks flushed a visible crimson, spreading from her cheekbones to her temples, even staining her neck a faint pink. Watanabe Hayabara suddenly felt that the cherry blossom petals resting in her hair were nowhere near as captivating as the blush on her face.
"Don't be nervous, Ichinose Honami." Watanabe Hayabara leaned forward slightly, a gentle curve to his lips as his fingertips brushed his cuffs unconsciously. "Whatever it is, I will do my best to help you within my capabilities."
"It's just... it's just..." Ichinose Honami clenched her fingers. "I received a love letter, and I don't know how to reject it. Could... could I trouble you to pretend to be my boyfriend for a while? She asked to meet me here after school today, and I arrived ten minutes early."
As soon as the words left her lips, she snapped her head up, only to lower it again just as quickly, as if she had committed some grave sin. The sunlight caught her trembling eyelashes, casting a small, fan-shaped shadow, and the roots of her ears turned so red they looked ready to bleed.
Watanabe Hayabara watched her embarrassment, the smile on his lips deepening. "A love letter? Ichinose Honami is certainly popular." He paused deliberately, watching her lips, which were pressed tight with tension. "But you could just reject her directly. Why go through the trouble of finding someone to play the part of a boyfriend?"
"It's just... the person who confessed to me is a cute girl in my class..." Ichinose Honami's voice was as faint as a mosquito's hum, and when she said the word "girl," she nearly buried her face in her chest.
She knew such a request was unreasonable, but she couldn't bear to hurt the girl who had confessed to her with such joy, which was why she had come up with this clumsy solution. Thinking of how heartbroken the other girl might be after a rejection, her throat felt clogged with cotton, making even breathing difficult.
Watching the girl wring her fingers in distress, her eyes rimmed with red, Watanabe Hayabara let out a soft chuckle. He stepped forward and reached out to brush a cherry blossom petal from her hair, his fingertips accidentally grazing her ear, causing the girl to shrink her neck as if electrocuted.
"Alright, Ichinose Honami." His voice held a soothing warmth. "Leave this matter to me. I will help you, and the outcome will be one that satisfies you."
Ichinose Honami jerked her head up, tiny stars of light instantly igniting in her eyes. The blush had yet to fade from her face, but she broke into a brilliant smile, clear as the sky after a rainstorm. "Thank you so much, Watanabe Hayabara! I'll treat you to a strawberry cake at the school cafe later; their seasonal special is delicious!"
The wind blew through the cherry blossom trees, and another flurry of petals fell, landing on the ground between them like a pink carpet. Watanabe Hayabara looked at the excitement in her eyes, his expression softening further. "Then I shall look forward to it."
Amidst the sound of falling cherry blossoms, a cry choked with tears suddenly broke through, fragile as crumpled candy wrapper: "Honami...!!"
Ichinose Honami's shoulders tensed violently. As she turned toward the sound, the petals in her hair shook loose. A girl with short hair emerged from the depths of the bushes, her face tilted upward, flaxen strands stuck to her dirt-streaked cheeks. A jagged clover leaf was pinned to the back of her uniform, clearly indicating she had been hiding there for quite some time.
"Chi-Chihiro?" Ichinose Honami's voice trembled. Her fingers instinctively gripped Watanabe Hayabara's sleeve, her fingertips nearly digging into the fabric. She watched Shiranami Chihiro, whose usually bright eyes were now brimming with water, like two pools about to overflow. Her lips moved for a long time, but she couldn't manage a single complete sentence.
Shiranami Chihiro sniffled, the tip of her nose as red as a ripe cherry. She wiped her face with her hand, only smearing the dirt further, her voice as light as a feather on the wind. "I heard everything, Honami." She looked at Ichinose Honami's stunned face, and tears finally slid down her cheeks, hanging like crystal beads on her chin. "You don't have to force yourself. I just... I just wanted you to know how I felt."
Once Shiranami Chihiro had wiped away her tears with the back of her hand, Watanabe Hayabara spoke slowly, his voice as steady as a windless lake. "May I ask your name?"
"My name is Shiranami Chihiro!" The girl snapped her head up, her eyes still wet, but her tone suddenly sharpened like a bristling kitten. "A man like you, stay away from Honami!" She took a half-step forward, shielding Ichinose Honami, though the massive difference in their builds made the scene look quite bizarre.
"Tsk." Watanabe Hayabara clicked his tongue, a flash of helplessness in his eyes, though he wasn't angry. He stepped aside, exposing Ichinose Honami, who was hiding behind him, to Shiranami Chihiro's view. "Shiranami Chihiro, first of all, it was Ichinose Honami who approached me to ask for help." He emphasized the word "approached," his gaze sweeping over Shiranami Chihiro's instantly frozen face. "I shouldn't have been a participant in this, but since I have agreed to help Ichinose Honami, I will make things clear to you—"
He paused for a moment, watching Shiranami Chihiro's knuckles turn white from clenching her fists, and continued: "The real reason Ichinose Honami came to me is that she doesn't want to reject you, but she cannot accept you either, which is why she is in this dilemma." The wind stirred his bangs, revealing eyes that were clear yet sharp. "She won't distance herself from you because of this indirect rejection; she simply cares about you too much. This isn't deception; it's a different kind of kindness."
Shiranami Chihiro's shoulders slumped slightly, and tears began to well up in her eyes again.
"However," Watanabe Hayabara shifted his tone, his voice softening slightly, "this kindness is not a form of love—at least, not romantic love. That is why she thought to reject you, because you two can be very good friends." He reached out and patted Ichinose Honami's shoulder, signaling her to step forward. "As for me, I am merely here to smooth over the relationship between you two and buffer the conflict."
Ichinose Honami bit her lower lip and walked slowly toward Shiranami Chihiro, reaching out to touch her dirt-stained cheek, but the other girl tilted her head slightly to avoid the contact. Sunlight pierced through the gaps between the three of them, casting overlapping shadows on the ground. Cherry blossom petals continued to fall silently, sticking to Shiranami Chihiro's tear-reddened eyes like solidified pink teardrops. Ichinose Honami's hand hung in mid-air, her fingertips trembling, her throat unable to produce a sound, as if blocked by a cherry blossom stem. Shiranami Chihiro stared at her trembling fingertips, then suddenly turned and bolted into the swirling rain of blossoms. The clover leaf pinned to her uniform fluttered violently as she ran, and she soon vanished into the layers of floral shadows.
