Background / History

Mu Nian found Song Shan among refugees when he was three years old. Starving and near death, Song Shan still clutched half a piece of dry ration; moved by his tenacity, Mu Nian brought him into the Clear Wood Sect and raised him personally. Mu Nian taught him his martial knowledge and eventually established him as sect master. 90

When the Blood Blade Sect threatened the Clear Wood Sect, Song Shan accepted the danger of using the Four Saints Secret Technique to reach the Xiantian Realm. He declared that protecting the sect and his junior sister mattered more than the possibility of being permanently stalled at that realm. 90 Mu Nian died after sacrificing his life force to complete the breakthrough, entrusting Song Shan with a jade slip to pursue the injured Hu Feibai and locate Mu Fuwan. 91

Song Shan initially presents himself as resolute, courteous, and devoted to the Clear Wood Sect. He willingly accepted a forced breakthrough to protect the sect, mourned Mu Nian’s death, and publicly styled himself as a defender of righteousness. 90 91 145 Before his Xiantian breakthrough, others regarded him as a modest and kind senior brother with a pure heart. 153

His conduct in the Hundred Thousand Mountains exposed a far more self-serving nature. After Hu Feibai broke the Four Saints Formation, Song Shan abandoned Mu Fuwan during their confrontation and fled under the pretense of seeking reinforcements. 123 He later lied to Liu Qinghan that Mu Fuwan had sacrificed herself, considered killing Liu for the sect’s remaining resources, and attempted to murder him with Clear Wood Sword Intent. 132 133
