Background / History

Madara was born during the Sengoku era to Tajima Uchiha. The Uchiha and Senju were hereditary enemies, and several of Madara’s younger brothers died in their clan’s war. His closest remaining family was his younger brother, Izuna. As a child, Madara met Hashirama Senju by a river; despite their clans’ hatred, both wished for a world without war. The conflict between their families eventually forced them into opposing sides, and Madara first awakened the Sharingan amid that turmoil. 108

After rising through repeated battles, Madara awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and became one of the era’s strongest ninja. When Tobirama Senju mortally wounded Izuna, Izuna gave Madara his eyes, allowing him to awaken the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Even then, Madara could not defeat Hashirama’s Wood Release. Hashirama’s willingness to end the feud ultimately persuaded Madara to join the Senju in founding Konohagakure. 108

Madara later concluded that peace could only be preserved through absolute power, directly opposing Hashirama’s belief that the village should unite all clans. After discovering the Uchiha Stone Tablet’s Eye of the Moon Plan, Madara chose to leave Konoha; no Uchiha followed him. He fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End and appeared to die after being struck from behind, but had used Izanagi to alter the boundary between illusion and reality. 107 108

In secret, Madara transplanted Hashirama Cells, eventually awakening the Rinnegan. He selected Obito Uchiha as a pawn, orchestrated the Nine-Tails Incident and Akatsuki’s covert operations, and pushed events toward the Fourth Shinobi World War. His plan culminated in becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki and casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi, only for Black Zetsu to reveal that Madara himself had been manipulated as part of Kaguya Otsutsuki’s resurrection scheme. 108 198

Appearance

Madara’s appearance changes dramatically across his life and transformations. During the Valley of the End battle, he fights in armor while controlling the Nine-Tails from above. As an Impure World Reincarnation, his body has lifeless gray-black skin and visible cracks. Personality

Madara began with the same desire for peace as Hashirama, but the deaths of his brothers and the violence of the Sengoku era transformed that ideal into an obsession with absolute control. He believed the Infinite Tsukuyomi could end all suffering by trapping every living being in a permanent dream. 108

He is exceptionally proud and dismissive of weaker opponents. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, he regards the Allied Shinobi Forces as insignificant and treats their attacks with indifference. Yet he takes strong opponents seriously: he recognizes Might Guy’s ability to threaten him and briefly acknowledges Sasuke’s insight and judgment. 110 119 136

Madara is also calculating and adaptive. He survives apparent death through Izanagi, prepares decades-long plans in hiding, exploits Obito’s grief, analyzes enemy techniques in battle, and steals Kakashi’s Sharingan when he needs Kamui to complete his objective. 108 136 198
