Background / History
Establishment in Linyuan Prefecture
For many years, Linyuan Prefecture had been under Qixia Immortal Sect influence and lacked an Eagle-Wolf Guard presence. The sect had performed the government’s law-enforcement functions until it relinquished that authority to the imperial court. Its former enforcement team largely entered the new Guard, receiving court stipends in addition to their sect support. 12
The Guard’s arrival marked a shift from sect-led local oversight to direct imperial control. Its members could earn merit through court assignments and exchange it for cultivation resources; its available resources were described as deeper and more varied than Qixia Immortal Sect’s. 12
Pingyang County Station
Zhao Ting established the Pingyang County station as its commander. A third-level Qi Refining cultivator, he commanded fifty elite cavalry divided into five squads, each led by a Skin Grinding Realm martial artist. The station’s purpose was to preempt cult activity across Linyuan Prefecture. 23
The Guard was not ordinarily permitted to interfere with local administration unless demonic or evil incidents were involved, but Zhao Ting’s force still carried greater political weight than Magistrate Yang’s county office. 23
Expansion and Wartime Crisis
The court later sought to greatly expand the Guard’s authority in Linyuan Prefecture, with the local Thousand-Household Office expected to become a Guard Pacification Office overseeing Tianshui Province. This expansion intensified internal competition for senior offices and drew concerns that recruited immortal-sect disciples could form sectarian factions inside the court’s enforcement arm. 96
During the Red Fire Mine campaign, the Guard’s main force breached the Unborn Cult’s Baleful Fire Array but suffered a major setback when Thousand-Household Commander Xiang led cavalry into a trapped mine passage. 105 While the elite force was compromised, the Unborn Cult assaulted Linyuan Prefecture City and seized the Guard’s heavily stocked armory. 110
The organization continued to operate from a temporary encampment after the city’s fall. At Tiger Hill, Xiang’s Ti Cavalry later deployed the Fire Dragon Ballista and surrounded the fleeing Unborn Cult forces following Black Spider Dharma King’s death. 116 118
Organization and Authority
Imperial Mandate
- The Guard is a secret-service agency outside the Cabinet and Six Ministries, operating under the Bureau of Profound Mysteries as the Emperor’s personal army in name. 23
- The Bureau of Profound Mysteries handles matters involving cultivators, while the Guard serves as its law-enforcement arm. 15
- Its internal archives compile intelligence on orthodox sects, cultivation methods, demons, ghosts, and heretical paths; the records were organized by Bureau officials in the capital. 25
- In Linyuan Prefecture, distance from the imperial center gave Flag-Bearers substantial autonomy, provided they delivered the required tribute to superiors. 37
Personnel and Ranks
| Position / Unit | Documented function |
|---|---|
| Medical Officer | An entry-level post without official rank. Xia Dong received a Guard medallion, official documents, two low-grade spirit stones per month, a Foundation Building Pill, and archive access after joining Zhao Ting’s flag. 24 25 |
| Flag-Bearer | Holds relatively independent administrative and financial authority; may recruit personnel and develop a loyal core force. 37 |
| Centurion | Commands larger formations and can issue battlefield orders to Flag-Bearers and cavalry. Xia Dong later reached this rank and gained access to the treasury allocation reserved for qualified centurions. 104 126 |
| Thousand-Household Officer / Commander | Senior prefectural command position overseeing major operations and personnel. Master Qian became Linyuan Prefecture’s official Thousand-Household Officer after Xiang was transferred out. 104 126 |
| Ti Cavalry | Elite mounted force used for reconnaissance, charges, encirclement, and major suppression operations. 104 105 118 |
Combat Personnel
The Guard includes both cultivators and formidable martial artists. Mortal Transformation Realm martial artists can contend with top-tier Qi Refining cultivators, while True Intent Realm martial artists are said not to fear Foundation Establishment cultivators. 12
Its ordinary personnel can vary sharply in quality. After the Red Fire Mine disaster and the fall of Prefecture City, guards assigned to an ancient-temple seal were only at the threshold of the Internal Strengthening Realm because the main force had been badly depleted. 111
Equipment and Resources
- Flying-fish robes and embroidered spring blades — Standard visual markers of Guard officers, worn by Zhao Ting and later Xia Dong. 23 62
- Waist medallions and official documents — Formal credentials issued to enlisted personnel. 25
- Black Flood Dragon Horses — Court-issued mounts for lower- and middle-ranking officers; they possess demon-beast bloodlines, can gallop over land, fly at low altitude, and provide limited combat strength. 96
- Internal archives — Restricted intelligence records covering supernatural factions, techniques, demons, ghosts, and hidden threats. 25
- Armories and inner treasury — Senior officers may obtain divine weapons, superior martial skills, and allocated cultivation resources through the Guard’s treasury system. 96 126
- Fire Dragon Ballista — A costly divine ballista containing a sealed Fire Dragon Divine Ability. Its attack rivals a low-grade Golden Core cultivator’s full-force strike and can lock onto a target’s aura. 118
Major Operations
Yin Spirit Mine Security
The Guard assigned Xia Dong as Flag-Bearer to assist with security at the Yin Spirit Mine. After three Unborn Cult assassins were killed there, Zhao Ting publicly announced that the Guard and Qixia Immortal Sect disciples had jointly eliminated the fiends, both establishing credit and exposing possible remaining cult agents. 62 69
Red Fire Mine Campaign
The Guard mobilized its Prefecture City elite force against the Unborn Cult’s Red Fire Mine stronghold. Master Qian and Vice Thousand-Household Officer Wang were assigned to seal the outer perimeter, while Xiang commanded the central force and Lone Moon was intended to infiltrate for the Sacred Heart Lotus Seeds. 104
A Ti Cavalry probe was burned apart by the Baleful Fire Array. After Lone Moon opened a breach with Taiyin Divine Light, the Guard charged into the mine; Xiang then pursued the apparent enemy retreat and became trapped with much of his cavalry behind Dragon-Sealing Stones and a formation preventing Earth Escape. 105
Tiger Hill Encirclement
Following Blue-Faced Ghost’s self-destruction, the Guard’s temporary camp marched on Tiger Hill under Xiang. Rather than lead the initial assault, Xiang waited for the Unborn Cult and Qixia Immortal Sect remnants to weaken Lone Moon before intervening. 116
After Lone Moon opened her Purple Mansion and killed Black Spider Dharma King, Xiang used the Fire Dragon Ballista against the retreating enemy and ordered Ti Cavalry, archers, and crossbowmen to annihilate the remaining Unborn Cult forces. 118

Trivia
- The Guard’s Martial Arts Grand Tournament drew elite competitors from several neighboring provinces, most of whom were Mortal Transformation Realm martial artists. 127
- Xia Dong’s one-sided victories prompted an emergency regulation barring all Immortal-Martial Dual Cultivators from Guard tournaments at every level. 127
- Although officially a court institution, corruption and private appropriation of seized resources were described as an open secret within the Linyuan Prefecture Guard. 113
