"I hope you've been having a reasonably pleasant time here, Wanda." The Arcanist spoke to the plainly dressed apprentice. Ordinarily, a scene like this would have been filled with warmth and concern, but a mischievous smirk hung on his face as he watched the apprentice angrily pull her head out of a tome nearly half her height. The fine fuzz kicked up by the turning pages irritated Wanda's nose, making her sneeze. She hurriedly opened her eyes, worried that she might knock over an ink bottle and stain these ancient books.

Salomon had long heard that Wanda had requested a full general education in spellcasting. Even though someone had already warned her that it would be difficult, she had no intention of changing her mind. She had heard her teacher say that he had completed the course in an extremely short time, so she assumed it could not be that hard—then she got a taste of failure. Not everyone could read the entirety of both Monster Identification and Overview of Schools within a month and recite them backward and forward like Salomon. Even in the magic world, where freaks were everywhere, Salomon counted as abnormal.

"I was reading the entry on Vampire Monsters. It doesn't mention vampire corpses rotting into worms," Wanda said. "Vampires, Werewolves, and ghouls don't either. The section on insect-type monsters also doesn't say where monsters formed from masses of worms come from. It only gives an official name and weaknesses, and..."
