Freezing seawater filled her lungs, turning them into heavy lumps of lead lodged in her chest. She could hear her own heartbeat, but it sounded impossibly distant, as though her heart were still beating on the surface. She suspected she had died long ago, that the heartbeat was merely an auditory hallucination. Otherwise, she should have been flailing her limbs and struggling to cough out the water. Yet nothing happened. Like a marble statue, she sank toward the seafloor, her limbs cold and heavy, unable to bend even a finger. Though she could not see, her sixth sense spread outward and touched the creatures swimming around her—those slimy, malformed fish. They swam silently, glaring maliciously at her flesh with their degenerated eyes. They were waiting for her to die so they could tear open her skin with their uneven pointed teeth and feast on the sweet innards of a warm-blooded creature.

This is going to hurt! she thought. She recalled the books she had read, those precious works of literature hidden away in the library. Only after her teacher had appeared had she been able to access the knowledge reserved for nobles. She could say with certainty that no poem in this world had ever described the other side of death. Not sacrifice, tragedy, and hot blood, but a person being gutted like a fish at the moment of death, with the stench of blood mixed with excrement and urine.
