The three participants in the negotiations left the room. From General Hale's expression, it was clear that she found some of the demands in the terms difficult to accept. Stephanie understood why she felt that way, but as long as she completed the first few tasks, Stephanie would grant her access to some intelligence and authority. Then she would no longer have doubts about the extremely difficult missions in the later clauses. Before that, General Hale needed to prove her capability and demonstrate her value. As for turning herself in directly to the Intelligence Department and exposing the Malik family as Hydra—she should not even think about it. Not only could she not determine which people in those departments were Hydra, but even if the military uncovered Hydra within its own ranks, it would not make the matter public. It would deal with them quietly itself, preventing other intelligence departments from finding out.

Ruby was exceedingly enthusiastic when she said goodbye, giving her a "cheek kiss." At least, Stephanie hoped it had only been a cheek kiss. Otherwise, she felt she would have to find out later whether the Sovereign was interested in young girls. Especially since Dr. Whitehall had guaranteed the little girl's reproductive ability—her womb was fertile ground, possessing astonishing fertility. What Stephanie worried about most was her own fertility. From what she had observed, under Salomon's astonishing charm offensive, Ruby certainly would not mind sharing a moment of pleasure with the Sovereign. Worse still, Ruby was not wearing the same clothes she had worn when she left the Hydra Youth Training Camp.

Putting herself in Ruby's place, Stephanie knew she would never refuse. That alone was enough to make her feel threatened.

"I hope I'll see you again next time." Ruby had Salomon's gift hanging from her
