A Little Secret in the Sewers

Many areas of London still used the Victorian-era sewer system. The London sewers designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette were also hailed as one of the world's seven great engineering wonders. Yet one could imagine how much manpower and material resources it took to maintain such a public facility. To the London city government and Parliament, the sewers only needed to remain functional. It was easy to imagine how much evil would fester in such a sprawling, dark, damp place. Thugs, addicts, and Homeless Men poured in like lice and fleas into fur. Garbage, corpses, and anything that needed hiding were stuffed by gangs and murderers into every corner of the lightless concrete tunnels.

Salomon had seen this Homeless Man twice before. Last time, he had been alive. This time, not so much.

Wanda decisively drew her pistol, aimed at the back of the Homeless Man's head, and fired several shots.

Clearly, she had diligently reviewed the materials provided by the City of Immortals. She did not lower her gun until she had blasted the unfortunate man's head into minced flesh. She was not using the small-caliber Explosive Rounds Pistols commonly found in the City of Immortals; such weapons were extremely difficult for anyone not particularly strong to handle. Instead, she used a modified Beretta M92F, equipped with an extended magazine and capable of three-round bursts and fully automatic fire. This level of firepower was enough for Wanda. If it was not, she could still use magic—though not powerful, high-level Evocation Spells. Wanda had always performed poorly in the practical portion of Introduction to the Elements. The strongest Evocation Spell she could cast was, at most, a small explosion roughly as powerful as a grenade.

A thin bubble of air covered their heads, separating and filtering the air in the sewers.
