History
Konoha era
At the start of the Third Shinobi World War, the Uchiha were a major Konoha clan whose members staffed the Konoha Military Police Force. Their clan head was killed fighting Kumogakure, leaving Uchiha Fugaku as acting head and opening a succession struggle within the clan 2 3.
Uchiha Gento led three hundred Uchiha elites in the campaign against Sunagakure after being appointed Konoha's supreme frontline commander. The expedition returned without losing a single clansman and distributed substantial war spoils among its participants, greatly increasing Gento's support within the clan 12 25.
Gento defeated Fugaku in the clan-head duel by using his Mangekyō Sharingan technique, Yomotsu, to imprison Fugaku in the Yomi Space. Elder Chie cast the deciding vote, making Gento the new Uchiha clan head 27.
Under Gento, the clan built its Clan Ancestral Hall. During its first major gathering, fifty-three clansmen awakened the Sharingan, most at the one-tomoe stage 33. The clan later surrendered its long-held control of the Military Police Force in exchange for the right to independently operate a Mission Hall 52.
Break from Konoha
Following the Nine-Tails incident, Konoha civilians openly accused the Uchiha of controlling the beast, despite Uchiha Police Force casualties during the disaster. The hostility intensified internal calls for a coup 50.
After Konoha moved against the clan, the Uchiha rebelled and withdrew from the village under Gento's leadership. Gento chose the Land of Hot Water as the site of a new Uchiha settlement 84.
The entire Uchiha Clan Grounds—including its homes, buildings, belongings, and residents—were relocated from Konoha through a Clan Relocation Card. The clan named its new settlement Hidden Xuan Village 89.
Rise of Hidden Xuan Village
The Uchiha's Mission Hall became highly sought after after the clan's victories against Kumogakure. Merchants, nobles, and envoys competed to hire Uchiha escorts and operatives, while bandits and rogue ninja increasingly avoided caravans bearing the clan crest 126.
By this period, the clan had grown to 6,569 members, including 3,491 ninja. Its low mission mortality and high birth rate created a sustained increase in population, wealth, and combat strength 126.
Gento's later campaigns expanded Uchiha influence beyond the Land of Hot Water. He destroyed Akatsuki, took control of the Land of Rain, overthrew the Raikage's regime in the Land of Lightning, and eventually unified the Shinobi World after a ten-year war 172 173.

Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the Uchiha clan's defining Kekkei Genkai. Its awakening is connected to intense emotional stimulation, which releases the Yin-style chakra stored within an Uchiha's eyes 42.
- A one-tomoe Sharingan can perceive opponents' movements, cast basic genjutsu, and raise a shinobi's battlefield capability enough to support advancement from genin to chunin 33.
- The dōjutsu improves perception, genjutsu aptitude, chakra reserves, and the ability to copy ninjutsu 313.
- The Clan Ancestral Hall provides a ten-percent increase to the chance of awakening the Sharingan 310.
- The clan's emblematic ocular power allows even non-specialists in genjutsu to disrupt an opponent's senses through eye contact 8.
Mangekyō Sharingan
The Mangekyō Sharingan is an exceptionally rare advanced evolution of the Sharingan, normally requiring overwhelming emotional trauma such as the death of a close relative 310.
- By the period of the Mangekyō Awakening Card rewards, only Madara, Gento, Shisui, and Itachi are identified as Mangekyō users within the clan 310.
- Gento's Yomotsu creates access to the Yomi Space, where targets can have their five senses suppressed and chakra continuously eroded; escape is impossible without the user's permission 27.
- Gento's Time-Guard can rewind his own state by five seconds, though it is limited to himself 25.
- Gento later obtains the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, repairing his ocular damage and removing the risk of blindness from his own Mangekyō use 43.
- Shisui possesses Kotoamatsukami, an ocular technique suited to controlling targets without their awareness 51.
- Itachi possesses Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and a red Susanoo armed with the Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror 104.
Flash Release
Gento created Flash Release specifically to suit the Uchiha's common Fire and Lightning chakra affinities by fusing those two natures into a new Kekkei Genkai 100.
- Thunder Fire Bullet — B-rank Flash Release ninjutsu. 100
- Flame Fang — A-rank Flash Release ninjutsu. 100
- Crimson Dragon — S-rank Flash Release ninjutsu. 100
- The technique was designed to strengthen the clan as a whole rather than remain solely a personal ability 99 100.
Collective Military Strength
The Uchiha's battlefield reputation rests on Sharingan users, elite Anbu, and several Mangekyō-level combatants.
- Three Uchiha Susanoo users—Gento, Shisui, and Fugaku—overwhelmed Konoha's attacking Anbu during the clan's withdrawal from Konoha 84.
- Uchiha Anbu bodyguards use genjutsu and close-quarters execution to protect nobles and officials in the Land of Hot Water 149.
- The clan captured more than three hundred Kumogakure prisoners, forcing the Fourth Raikage into ransom negotiations 115 117.
- The Uchiha's growing strength became sufficient for Konoha's former peer clans to regard them as a dominant force that the Five Great Nations avoided confronting directly 165.
Symbols
- The Uchiha fan crest appears on Clan Ancestral Hall lanterns and on clan attire 33 79.
- Later Uchiha clansmen are described as wearing clothing bearing a Gunbai crest while living in Azure Tide Port 225.
Relationships
- Konohagakure — The Uchiha's original village and former home. The clan surrendered control of the Military Police Force, later clashed with Konoha authorities, and ultimately withdrew to establish its own village 52 84 89.
- Land of Hot Water — Host nation of Azure Tide Port and Hidden Xuan Village after the clan's relocation from Konoha 84 89.
- Kumogakure — A major military rival. Kumogakure mobilized against Hidden Xuan Village, suffered defeat, and later paid ransom for captured personnel 108 115 117.
- Chinoike Clan — Historical enemy clan. The Chinoike were reportedly exiled to Hell Valley by the Uchiha in an earlier era and retain deep resentment toward them 89 108.
- Kajiya Clan — A clan of ninja-tool forgers that sought Uchiha protection and migration to Hidden Xuan Village in exchange for producing equipment 99.
- Konoha's other ninja clans — Initially fellow Konoha clans, they became increasingly concerned as the Uchiha's Mission Hall secured lucrative commissions and the clan's influence expanded 74.
