Background

The Uchiha were one of Konoha's two original resident clans alongside the Senju, and their lands remained in the village's central area even after Konoha expanded and the Senju declined. 7

Decades before the main story, Uchiha Setsuna led a hawkish faction that plotted to overthrow the Second Hokage. The conspiracy was discovered before it could be enacted, and Setsuna and his allies were imprisoned in Anbu Prison for decades. Setsuna was eventually released after Fugaku's contributions during the Third Shinobi World War. 13

Setsuna later explained that his original aim had been for the Uchiha to leave Konoha and establish a new homeland, fearing that the clan would eventually be cornered politically. Though he still hated Senju Tobirama, he no longer wished to see the Uchiha destroyed. 14

Sharingan

Uchiha shinobi commonly employ the Sharingan in combat. Its documented uses include tracking opponents' movements, identifying attack patterns, and exploiting openings.

Political Position in Konoha

For roughly thirty years, the Uchiha were kept largely within the Military Police Force and excluded from Anbu and Konoha's advisory circle. This exclusion became a major source of dissatisfaction, particularly because the clan had never produced an adviser despite its status and military strength. 32 98

The clan's standing worsened immediately after the Nine-Tails Incident, when the fox was seen with Sharingan in its eyes. Although Sarutobi Hiruzen later presented Anbu evidence clearing the Uchiha of responsibility, many Konoha officials and civilians remained distrustful. 9 11

After the incident, Konoha requested that the Uchiha relocate from the central district as part of reconstruction. Fugaku eventually negotiated increased Police Force funding, Uchiha authority over Naka Shrine and its surroundings, restrictions on non-Uchiha access to the shrine area, and a public clarification of the clan's innocence; the leadership did not grant the clan a formal place in village decision-making. 35 36

Naoki's Southern Border achievements and Konoha's public recognition of them significantly improved the clan's reputation. However, the clan's rising prestige, Shisui's Mangekyō Sharingan, and Naoki's later victory over the Fourth Raikage intensified the concerns of Hiruzen's advisers. 32 46 97 98

Story Role / Major Arcs

Nine-Tails Incident

During the Nine-Tails' attack, the Third Hokage initially orders the Military Police Force to evacuate civilians rather than engage the fox. Fugaku obeys, despite confusion and dissatisfaction among the clansmen. 1

After Naoki points out the Sharingan in the Nine-Tails' eyes and warns that the clan may be blamed, the Uchiha choose to enter the battle to protect Konoha and clear their name. Fugaku organizes the deployment, and the clan assists in suppressing the Nine-Tails. 3

Danzo subsequently advocates using the clan's disobedience and the Sharingan evidence as grounds for annihilation. Hiruzen refuses, judging that Konoha cannot survive another internal conflict after its losses. 6

Southern Border Campaign

Fugaku permits Naoki and Itachi to join the Southern Border mission so that they can earn military merit, while Setsuna is asked to protect them. 13 15

The Uchiha contingent suffers severe losses while fighting Kirigakure. Zongye loses his left arm, while Setsuna holds off Karatachi Yagura to enable the younger shinobi to escape. 22 29

Shisui arrives during the final battle and manifests Susanoo to protect the surviving Uchiha from Yagura. Naoki is presumed dead after being knocked into the sea, and Konoha issues a ten-million-ryō bounty for information on him. 30 31

Internal Reform Conflict

Following Naoki's return, his growing prestige draws dozens of clan members to a gathering held in his honor. Fugaku becomes concerned by the attention and by Takuto's growing support. 62

Naoki and Yashiro begin a rectification movement within the Military Police Force before the Kumogakure delegation incident. The reforms target low attendance, poor case-closure rates, rigid patrol patterns, and mismatched supplies. 68 69

Fugaku publicly declares that Naoki's orders carry his own authority, forcing every bureau to cooperate. Takuto and Tekka resist the reforms, while Danzo attempts to exploit their conflict as an opening against the clan. 69 70

Tekka later resolves to free the detained Takuto and flee with him, believing Naoki will ensure that both reform opponents are removed from power. 106
