Background

Anbu service and Minato's legacy

Kakashi served in the Anbu during Naruto and Menma's childhood. Minato had assigned him to protect Kushina and witness the twins' birth, hoping the responsibility would help him leave his grief behind. The Nine-Tails incident occurred on the night of the delivery, however, and Kakashi came to believe he had failed both Minato and the children. 6

He initially avoided social contact, ignoring Might Guy's greeting near Ichiraku Ramen. Guy brought him back to meet Naruto and Menma, where Menma showed Minato's engraved kunai and reminded Kakashi that Minato would not want to see him consumed by the past. 6

Early mentorship

While covering for Might Guy on a mission, Kakashi became Naruto and Menma's instructor. He taught them hand seals, chakra control through tree climbing, and the Three Basic Techniques: Transformation, Substitution, and Clone. He adapted to their different rates of progress—encouraging Naruto through repeated failures while challenging Menma after he mastered and combined the techniques immediately. 7 8
