Background / History
Sasuke grew up admiring his older brother, Itachi, while seeking both Itachi's recognition and Fugaku's approval. Menma's deliberate taunting exposed how dependent Sasuke was on Itachi's protection; overwhelmed by humiliation and anger, Sasuke awakened his one-tomoe Sharingan 18. The incident became the foundation of his rivalry with Menma, whom Sasuke vowed to surpass 35.
Fugaku personally taught Sasuke the Great Fireball Technique, though Sasuke initially struggled to master it 28. Itachi continued training him even when his own personal life and later Anbu duties demanded his attention. Sasuke missed his brother deeply after Itachi joined the Anbu and responded by training harder to catch up to him 44 45.
After graduating, Sasuke was assigned to Team 7 with Naruto Uzumaki and Haruno Sakura 84. During the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru branded him with a Cursed Seal. Though Sakura urged him to withdraw because the mark caused him constant pain, Sasuke refused 125. He later used the Cursed Seal Second State against Gaara and developed Wailing Chidori by fusing Chidori with the seal's senjutsu power 142 207.
Appearance
Sasuke's eyes turn scarlet when his Sharingan is active. His combat appearance changes drastically when he invokes the Cursed Seal or Mangekyō Sharingan.
- Sharingan — Blood-red pupils with tomoe; his three-tomoe Sharingan is used for close observation and prediction 143.
- Cursed Seal Second State — Black markings spread across his body, a black four-pointed star forms on his face, and wing-like appendages grow from his back 142.
- Mangekyō Sharingan — Its use places a severe burden on his eyesight; repeated use leaves him close to blindness 434.
- Susanoo — Manifests as a purple skeletal or half-body armored form wielding a sword 338 489.
Personality
Sasuke is intensely competitive, particularly toward Itachi, Menma, and Naruto. He resents being seen as weaker or dependent, and Menma's childhood mockery becomes a lasting source of motivation 18 35. He is blunt and dismissive toward others, often criticizing Naruto and Sakura rather than softening his words 109 191.
In battle, Sasuke is observant and calculating. He uses clones, substitutions, traps, swordplay, and Sharingan perception to turn an opponent's preparations against them 276 328. His fixation on power later makes him susceptible to Obito's manipulation; believing Konoha could not help him surpass Itachi or his rivals, he defects to Akatsuki 326 329.
Despite his coldness, Sasuke gradually recognizes the value of comrades. He tells Naruto that strength is not a means to prove one has surpassed another, but something shaped by the bonds of those who refuse to abandon each other 163. By the time he receives Six Paths Yin Power, his stated desire is to use his own strength to protect the people he wishes to protect 535.

- Channels Lightning Style chakra through the Kusanagi Sword to cut apart chakra sword slashes 417.

The Sage of Six Paths grants Sasuke a black crescent-shaped Yin seal.
- Identifies Sasuke as Indra's reincarnation 535.
- The context does not document its specific combat applications.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — His primary blade; used with Lightning Style chakra and in conjunction with Chidori techniques 326 417.
- Kunai and shuriken — Used for thrown-weapon feints and close combat 142 143.
- Itachi's forehead protector — Returned to him by Naruto during their Valley of the End confrontation 333.

- Orochimaru — Instructor who trains Sasuke and provides the Cursed Seal. Sasuke is later recommended to him by Menma for further training 171 210.
- Uchiha Obito / the masked man — Manipulator who tempts Sasuke with promises of power, recruits him into Akatsuki, and uses him as a pawn against the Five Kage 326 337 420.
- Suigetsu, Karin, and Jugo — Members of Team Hawk. Sasuke recruits them during his Akatsuki period; they support him during his pursuit of Killer B and at the Five Kage Summit 352 354 361 416.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Rivalry and Team 7
Menma's provocation causes Sasuke to awaken the Sharingan, turning their hostility into a lasting rivalry. Sasuke later joins Team 7 alongside Naruto and Sakura, where his rivalry with Naruto develops alongside their reluctant friendship 18 84.
Chūnin Exams and Orochimaru's Influence
After Orochimaru brands him with the Cursed Seal, Sasuke refuses to withdraw from the Chūnin Exam preliminaries despite Sakura's concerns. He advances his Sharingan, Chidori, and Cursed Seal techniques, including the black Wailing Chidori 125 142 143 207.
Defection from Konoha
The masked man exploits Sasuke's insecurity over Itachi, Naruto, Menma, and Xingli's growth. Sasuke decides that Konoha cannot provide the power he seeks, incapacitates Naruto with a tranquilizer bomb, and escapes with Zetsu's aid 326 328 329.
At the Valley of the End, Sasuke battles Naruto with Cursed Seal Second State, Kirin, and Wailing Chidori. Itachi intervenes and takes Sasuke's Chidori, triggering Sasuke's Mangekyō Sharingan awakening before Obito extracts him from the battlefield 332 333.
Akatsuki and Team Hawk
Sasuke agrees to capture Killer B in exchange for access to Tailed Beast power, choosing the Eight-Tails as proof of his strength 337. He recruits Suigetsu, Karin, and Jugo, forming Team Hawk 352 354 361.
He later leaves Akatsuki because its goal of capturing Naruto conflicts with his own desire to defeat Naruto personally. Obito manipulates him again, redirecting Team Hawk to the Five Kage Summit 416.
Five Kage Summit
Sasuke infiltrates the Land of Iron, cuts through samurai, and confronts the Raikage. Though he uses Chidori, Amaterasu, and Susanoo, the Raikage's overwhelming physical power leaves him badly injured before Gaara intervenes 417 419.
Obito openly states that Sasuke was sent to weaken and potentially take the Five Kage hostage, treating him as a tool to sharpen his ocular power through combat 420.
Return to Konoha
Menma defeats Sasuke and forcibly returns him to Konoha. Sasuke reunites with his family and learns that Itachi is alive, leaving him conflicted by joy, remorse, anger, and grief 433 434.
With his Mangekyō use rapidly damaging his eyesight, Fugaku and Itachi offer their own eyes, but Sasuke chooses to face the consequences himself. Menma later begins arranging an experimental artificial-eye procedure with Orochimaru to help Sasuke and Itachi pursue Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 434 435.
Fourth Shinobi World War
Sasuke fights alongside Itachi against Kabuto, using Susanoo and the Kusanagi Sword while Itachi guides their effort to stop the Impure World Reincarnation 489 491. During the battle against the Ten-Tails, he attacks its split bodies from atop Aoda with his half-body Susanoo 503.
The Sage of Six Paths recognizes Sasuke as Indra's reincarnation and grants him Six Paths Yin Power, entrusting Naruto and Sasuke to decide their own future 535.
