Background and History

The Shimura Clan was a second-tier Konoha ninja clan described as comparable to the Sarutobi Clan. At its peak, it had more than 800 members and nearly 200 ninja, including almost 20 Jonin or Special Jonin. The clan made substantial sacrifices to support Danzō after he became Hokage Assistant and founded Root. By Kizaru's academy enrollment, it was described as both its strongest and its most vulnerable in fifty years: it had gained influence but needed time to turn those gains into lasting strength 4.

Kizaru's talent made him the clan's chosen future head. The elders blocked Danzō's attempt to place him directly in Root and assigned the Jonin Shimura Isshin to protect him. When Kizaru displayed his light-based ability, the Great Elder presented it as the awakening of an ancestral Light Style bloodline to make his extraordinary power easier for outsiders to accept. Other knowledgeable clans disputed the claim that the Shimura had ever possessed such a Kekkei Genkai; the clan was known instead for Wind Release ninjutsu 1 2 33 37.

Kizaru's academy achievements raised the clan's standing. Clan heads visited its compound, while the Yamanaka and Aburame clans sent elite ninja to Root as gestures of closeness. The Shimura publicly promoted Kizaru's later victory over a Kumogakure force and his capture of the Third Raikage. Its rivalry with the Uchiha was rooted partly in Danzō's suppression of that clan and the Shimura family's support for him 14 15 74.

After Kizaru became the Fourth Hokage, he told Danzō that the Hokage's family could no longer conduct itself as it had while supporting Konoha from the shadows. Danzō agreed to change the clan's approach. Kizaru later exposed a group of Shimura ninja who had used his name to secure favors and kickbacks; fifteen clan members, including Shimura Shigenobu, were sent to the Interrogation Department 237 331 332.

Members and Associates

• Shimura Danzō — clan head, Hokage Assistant, and founder of Root. His demands on the clan brought influence but also heavy losses 1 4 260.
• Shimura Kizaru — Danzō's nephew and the clan's designated future head; later became the Fourth Hokage 2 237.
• Shimura Isshin — one of the clan's twelve Jonin at the time of Kizaru's childhood; assigned to protect him 2.
• The three clan elders — supported Kizaru's development and opposed sending him directly to Root. The Great Elder publicly advanced the ancestral Light Style claim 1 2.
• Shimura Yoshihiko, Shimura Tanin, and Shimura Yuki — entered the Ninja Academy alongside Kizaru. Yoshihiko was the Third Elder's grandson 4.
• Shimura Shintaro — a younger clansman who later managed Kizaru's business affairs 4 181.
• Shimura Shigenobu — involved in using the Hokage's reputation for personal gain; among the clansmen caught in Kizaru's purge 331 332.
• Namikaze Minato — Danzō's adopted son, who moved into the Shimura estate but kept his surname 42.

Clan Relations

• Yamanaka Clan — maintained friendly ties with the Shimura and supplied ninja to Root 6 14.
• Aburame Clan — already on good terms with the Shimura; likewise sent elite ninja to Root 14.
• Uchiha Clan — historically hostile because of Danzō's suppression, though Kizaru later built a closer working relationship with its leadership 15 121 168.

Parallel-World Clan

In the parallel world visited by Kizaru, Danzō's prolonged use of clan ninja in Root had left the Shimura Clan with fewer than a hundred people, most described as elderly, weak, sick, or disabled. Some members had defected after opposing him, while former allies had distanced themselves. Despite its decline, the clan retained a place in Konoha's high-level meetings as an early supporter of the village's founding alliance 363 364 366 373.

Kizaru entered that world under the name Shimura Wuxing. Danzō accepted him as kin, named him second-in-command and successor, and was subsequently killed after Kizaru secretly allied with Tsunade. Kizaru then became the parallel-world clan head and opened the Ten Thousand Goods general store 365 373 374.
