Nature

Shinigami are long-lived spiritual beings. Their bodies consist of countless Reishi assembled into a spiritual body around a soul; their long lifespan means training slows dramatically after the initial stages of growth 37 180.

When a Shinigami dies, their body normally breaks down into Reishi and returns to Soul Society. The remains of individuals with exceptionally dense Reiatsu do not disperse naturally, creating a threat to the balance of the Three Realms if left unmanaged 151 154 157.

Zanpakuto

A Shinigami's Zanpakuto is forged by imprinting the essence of their soul onto a masterless Asauchi. Because no two souls are identical, the same Asauchi becomes a different Zanpakuto in each wielder's hands 10 164.

The bond between Shinigami and Zanpakuto is considered fundamental: “the blade is the man.” Losing or discarding one's blade in combat is regarded as highly abnormal among Shinigami 53.

Shikai

Shinigami attain Shikai by entering their inner world, communicating with their Zanpakuto, and learning its true name. The resulting release and ability reflect the wielder's soul 10 179.

• A Shinigami normally creates their personal Zanpakuto by living and sleeping with an Asauchi while repeatedly tempering it 10.
• Conventional sword meditation can be used to establish communication, though unconventional ritual methods can also produce a bond 10 11.
• Zanpakuto account for an estimated seventy to eighty percent of a typical Shinigami's combat capability, making abilities that suppress or turn blades against their users especially dangerous 139.

Bankai

Bankai requires the Zanpakuto's Materialization and Subjugation: the wielder manifests the spirit into the physical world, then defeats it to force its submission 179.

• Ordinary materialization training generally takes more than ten years 179.
• The Tenshintai was developed to accelerate materialization training 179.
• Bankai-capable Shinigami are rare enough to be recorded in Soul Society history and academy textbooks 149 179.
• A Bankai is generally stated to possess five to ten times the combat power of its Shikai, with exceptional users potentially exceeding that range 147.

Combat Arts

Hakuda

Hakuda is Shinigami hand-to-hand combat. It is formally assessed at the Spiritual Arts Academy and can be taught by high-ranking combatants such as Shihoin Yoruichi and Yamamoto Shigekuni 3 5 77.

• Yamamoto's advanced Hakuda techniques include Ikkotsu and Sokotsu 140 147.
• Hakuda remains effective against foes who disrupt Zanpakuto use, including Muramasa's ability to incite blades against their wielders 140.

Kido

Kido is a system of spells powered by a Shinigami's own spiritual power. It includes destructive Hadō and binding Bakudō techniques 26 37 171.

• Hadō #4: Byakurai was used to defeat a rogue Shinigami 26.
• Hadō #31: Shakkahō is taught through formal Kido instruction 37.
• High-level Bakudō can restrain even extremely powerful targets, as shown by Bakudō #99, Bankin 262.
• Unlike Quincy combat methods, which manipulate external Reishi, Shinigami primarily wield their own spiritual power 171.

Kendo and Hoho

Shinigami may specialize in swordsmanship and movement techniques alongside Hakuda and Kido. Elite combatants are evaluated across Zanpakuto skill, hand-to-hand combat, Hoho, and Kido 117.

• The Death Sword Style, inherited from the First Kenpachi, is an advanced Kendo school used by Kisaragi Akira 101 149.

Organization

Spiritual Arts Academy

The Spiritual Arts Academy trains prospective Shinigami in subjects including Soul Society history, Kido, Hakuda, and Zanpakuto meditation 3 10 37.

Graduates who pass their assessment become official Shinigami and may apply to join their preferred division. Exceptionally talented graduates can be accepted quickly by their chosen divisions 91.

Gotei 13

The Gotei 13 is Soul Society's principal Shinigami force, organized into divisions led by captains and supported by lieutenants, seated officers, and regular squad members 91 93.

• First Division — Led by the Captain-Commander; its selection process is notably strict 99.
• Second Division — Closely tied to the Shihoin Clan and known for dangerous, sacrifice-oriented operations 99.
• Sixth Division — Composed entirely of nobles during the period described 99.
• Eleventh Division — A combat-focused division whose culture emphasizes training, direct battle, and martial strength 92 180.

Society and Politics

Soul Society is shaped by entrenched noble factions, particularly the Five Great Noble Families. Their competition for influence has produced wars, assassinations, fabricated accusations, and the use of Shinigami as expendable political tools 19 81 112.

Central 46 served as Soul Society's highest judicial body, though its punishments could reflect noble interests and subjective judgments rather than impartial justice 151. Following Central 46's destruction, the First Division assumed its duties and began planning a lawful replacement body 309.

Konso Funeral Rite

The Konso Funeral Rite is performed for deceased Shinigami whose high-density Reishi cannot naturally return to Soul Society. Its true purpose is not to return that Reishi to the soil, but to send it into Hell and prevent it from destabilizing the Three Realms 154 157.

• Shinigami at the third rank of Reiatsu or above require the rite because their spiritual remains are too dense to disperse normally 154.
• The underground prison's isolated structure slows the decomposition of dead prisoners, so their remains are moved to the Seireitei for division funerals 151.
• A disruption connected to a Konso Funeral Rite upset the balance between Hell and the Three Realms, allowing sinners to become a renewed threat 199.

Relations with Other Races

• Hollows / Menos Grande — Shinigami traditionally treat Hollow extermination as a core duty 29. Later developments demonstrate that coexistence between Shinigami, Menos Grande, and Quincies is possible under Kisaragi Akira's rule 299 311.
• Quincies — Shinigami and Quincies were historically natural enemies and fought a major war under Yhwach's Wandenreich 170 171. Quincy soldiers were stated to have individually surpassed ordinary Gotei 13 squad members in the past 171.
• Soul King and the Three Realms — The Soul King's power created and stabilizes the Soul Society, Human World, and Hueco Mundo; Shinigami serve as guardians of the balance sustained by that arrangement 36 158 157.
