Background / History

Uncle Nine is a direct descendant of the Maoshan Sect who runs the Public Mortuary and trains Qiusheng and Wencai as his disciples. He initially considers both boys troublesome, particularly Qiusheng, whose exceptional aptitude is undermined by laziness and pride. Despite his complaints, Uncle Nine believes Qiusheng could inherit his mantle with proper guidance. 1

After Qiusheng demonstrates unexpected progress during the Wang Family Village incident, Uncle Nine entrusts him with resolving the demon case while remaining nearby to protect him. He later passes down Maoshan's secret inheritance, the Lightning Bolt Fist, making clear that he has high expectations for his eldest disciple. 2 6

He takes responsibility for the Ren family's exhumation and reburial, correctly identifies the tampered feng shui arrangement at Old Master Ren's grave, and urges Master Ren to cremate the preserved corpse. When Master Ren refuses, Uncle Nine has the coffin moved to the Public Mortuary and prepares for the danger of its eventual corpse transformation. 20 21

While searching for a new burial site, he is ambushed by the White-Robed Twin Fiends—ghosts he had encountered in the past. He protects Qiusheng and Wencai, fights beside Qiusheng after the latter refuses to flee, and grows suspicious that the attack is connected to the Ren family's troubles. 23 24 25

Following Ren Weiyong's transformation and escape, Uncle Nine traces the conspiracy to the feng shui master Zhou Kun. He confronts the Corpse King in an Yin Cave, but recognizes the limits of his strength when Zhou Kun attempts to use heavenly tribulation to become a Golden-Armored Corpse King. He defers to the Old Heavenly Master, who arrives to seal Zhou Kun away. 31 32

When Ren Weiyong returns as a powerful zombie, Uncle Nine fights alongside Taoist Four Eyes and Qiusheng. He uses an array and the Thunder Summoning Technique to strip away the zombie's corpse energy, creating the opening for Qiusheng to deliver the final blow. 42 43

Personality

Uncle Nine is stern, blunt, and deeply committed to Maoshan discipline. He harshly reprimands Wencai for disrespecting hierarchy and for neglecting cultivation, while also criticizing Qiusheng whenever his disciple becomes smug or careless. 6 9

His severity is paired with genuine protectiveness. He repeatedly places himself between his disciples and dangerous entities, praises their preparation when deserved, and gives Qiusheng increasingly advanced teachings once he accepts the scale of his talent. 22 23 45

He deliberately withholds praise from Qiusheng to curb the disciple's arrogance, even destroying evidence of Qiusheng's progress in the Heavenly Dipper Bagua Steps. However, he eventually abandons this approach when Qiusheng's achievements become impossible to deny. 14 45
