Under the scrutinizing gazes of Legolas, Aragorn, and the others, Wang Zhen offered no further explanation. He merely said that he kept a bird of prey that could serve as his eyes in the sky.

Although Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, and the dwarf Gimli all knew that explanation was perfunctory, after spending so many days together, Wang Zhen and the others had deliberately revealed some abilities and items unlike anything found in Middle-earth, demonstrating their power. The members of the Fellowship of the Ring had therefore already accepted that Wang Zhen and his companions possessed incredible abilities. One more ability involving a trained bird was nothing too difficult to understand.

Of course, as the wisest of the Maiar, Gandalf thought beyond the possibility that Wang Zhen had a flying pet. Unless Wang Zhen could share the bird's vision, there was no way he could so easily know that the flock of crows had been summoned by Saruman the White Wizard.

Fortunately, Wang Zhen's Eye of Observation, Little White, had an extremely long viewing range and spotted the flock early. This gave the Fellowship of the Ring ample time to clear away the campsite and hide among the cracks and shadows of the surrounding rocks. Not long after they concealed themselves, hundreds of crows covered in black feathers and emanating faint wisps of dark mist flew in from the distant horizon like an ink-black cloud, entering the Fellowship's sight. Just as Gandalf and the others prepared to endure it and avoid this flock of scouting crows, something unexpected happened.

Wang Zhen did not want to simply follow the plot so obediently. Moreover, he knew that whether or not these crows found the Fellowship of the Ring, Saruman the White Wizard had already determined through other means that they intended to cross
