History
Early life and cultivation
Zhou Yan was born into a poor household that often lacked sufficient food. As a teenager, he supported his family through cart pulling, having obtained the work through his brother-in-law Ma Yan's recommendation. His exceptional cart-pulling income was enabled by the Heaven Rewards Diligence system, though he concealed his earnings and continued living modestly with his family. 2 7
After obtaining the Profound Yin Corpse Refining Technique, Zhou Yan chose the dangerous heterodox path of corpse refinement. The art gave him combat power from the beginning by allowing him to command zombies, but its corpse aura and Yin energy threatened to damage his body without constant medicinal nourishment. 5 8
He supplemented this path with the Five Animal Frolics, Shennong Health Cultivation Method, Yakshas Meditation Method, and later the Prajna Heart Sutra. Doctor Zhuang accepted him as an apprentice after Zhou Yan mastered the Shennong method on his first attempt. 14 35
Yue Mansion retainer
Zhou Yan became a guest retainer of the Yue Mansion, gaining access to cultivation texts, resources, and a safer channel into the cultivation world. He kept his family in an inner-city courtyard but remained in the outer city himself because its Yin-heavy geomancy better suited corpse refinement. 47
While accompanying Yue Yuna's caravan, he refined and deployed increasingly powerful corpse servants, including an Escape Corpse whose speed and stealth were comparable to a Qi-Inducing Realm cultivator. 59
His association with the Yue Mansion brought both opportunity and conflict. Zhou Yan protected Yue-affiliated personnel, fought Zhao Qixiong and Elder Xin, and gradually developed an uneasy political partnership with Yue Yuna. 108 117
Rise of Kang City
After advancing to the Qi-Inducing Realm, Zhou Yan began building his corpse-controlling forces into a structured military asset. He developed the Thousand Wood Forest Formation, combined it with controlled corpses and formation artifacts, and treated the resulting Dao Soldier-style formation as his principal means of protecting his path. 119 150 184
As Kang City's leader, Zhou Yan cultivated officials, recruited specialists, acquired refining talent, and chose to train new cultivators rather than rely solely on costly and unreliable recruits. 163 309
He expanded the Inner Heaven and Earth divine ability into a concealed logistical base, using it to shelter House Control units, grow spirit plants, transport supplies through the Zhao Family blockade, and maintain his forces at readiness. 170 258
Defeat of the Zhao Family and rule of the Northwest
Zhou Yan used a formation of nine hundred and nine Armored Zombies to confront the Zhao Family, later defeating Zhao Ren with the killing move Azure Dragon Probing Claw. 230 232
Following the Zhao Family's fall, he consolidated the Northwest by recapturing Azure Dragon Pass and Lanzhou City, absorbing submitting factions, and installing Jin Mantang's administrative staff in Western Capital. 390
The Zhao Family's Spirit Realm and inheritances gave Zhou Yan immense material wealth, military records, cultivation arts, and the knowledge needed to rebuild armored cavalry and strengthen his intelligence network. 395 402
Ancestral Dragon Secret Realm
Within the Ancestral Dragon Secret Realm, Zhou Yan obtained the Zhao Border Cavalry inheritance and learned that his existing armored cavalry was only a weakened derivative of a true Military Formation Dao Soldier. 471
He completed a Warring States-era trial by rising from an ordinary soldier to Qin's Grand Marshal and conquering the other six states. The experience fused the Thousand Wood Forest Formation and Four Symbols Grand Array into the Four Symbols Military Formation: Azure Dragon Formation; it also elevated several techniques into divine abilities. 472
Appearance
The Mystic Yin Art altered Zhou Yan's appearance, leaving his skin fair and smooth like jade and giving him the refined temperament of a delicate scholar. 108
- Originally described as handsome. 108
- Projects an oppressive, superior-like presence as his cultivation grows. 36
- Usually restrains his aura, though spiritually sensitive people can perceive the pressure he exerts. 436
- His intense formation study can leave him sweating heavily, radiating heat, and visibly exhausted from mental overexertion. 438
Personality
Zhou Yan is relentlessly diligent. He repeatedly drives himself beyond healthy limits—neglecting food, rest, and hygiene while refining corpses or drilling formations—and has collapsed from mental exhaustion after pushing his techniques too far. 77 177
He is also methodical and cautious. Rather than gamble on dramatic victories, Zhou Yan prefers to accumulate resources, prepare contingencies, and crush opposition only after securing overwhelming advantages. 280 450
Despite his ruthlessness toward enemies, he remains strongly attached to his family and treats trusted subordinates as people rather than expendable tools. He supports his relatives' cultivation, plans for their safety, and earns loyalty from figures such as Jin Mantang, Yue Feng, Brother Yun, and Qi Ming. 245 445 450
- Values practical resources—grain, arms, spirit plants, trained personnel, and records—over ornamental wealth. 395
- Respects useful knowledge regardless of whether it comes from orthodox sects, heterodox arts, enemies, or ancient inheritances. 155 395
- Is decisive against threats; his enemies note that he avoids indiscriminate slaughter but eliminates dangerous opposition thoroughly. 570
- Recognizes his own weaknesses, particularly his comparatively average martial talent, and prioritizes spells, formations, corpse control, and body tempering accordingly. 408 463

- Was greatly enhanced by the Enlightenment Tea Tree and thousand-year Origin Cedar. 170 330
