Background / History

Mei is the daughter of Raiden Ryoma, whose influence over Nagazora once resembled that of a feudal ruler. Her family was formerly known as the Hokushin family and possesses inherited secret arts; Mei is the only known bearer of an original Stigmata within seven generations of her family. 4 44 45

After Cocolia imprisoned Ryoma and seized ME Corp, Mei became the target of organized bullying at Chiba Academy. The isolation left her emotionally numb and highly sensitive to others' malice, though she recognizes that Jiang Cheng and Xilian do not look at her with the disgust she had come to expect. 3 4

Jiang Cheng reveals that Cocolia is responsible for both Ryoma's imprisonment and the pressure surrounding Mei's latent power. Though frightened by the prospect of leaving the city and unleashing that power, Mei agrees to escape with him. 4 5

During the escape from Nagazora, Mei discovers the destructive scope of her lightning authority. Her fear that her Honkai power is eroding Jiang Cheng causes her to suppress herself even when facing Bronya and Welt, repeatedly placing herself at a disadvantage rather than risk losing control. 13 18 22

Jiang Cheng later revives the severely injured Mei after defeating Cocolia's forces. They confess their feelings and embrace; Mei then completes her transformation into the Herrscher of Thunder and confronts Cocolia with her full power. 30 31

Following Cocolia's defeat, Mei reunites with her rescued father and returns with the group to the Raiden residence. She remains determined to help Jiang Cheng change the future he has foreseen. 36 37 43

When she stops suppressing her resentment, Mei becomes cold, decisive, and merciless toward Cocolia's forces. She describes this side of herself as the self she had concealed beneath layers of pretense. 13
