Background / History

Raiden Ryoma held extraordinary political and economic influence over Nagazora. His family possessed immense wealth, technology beyond the era, inherited sword arts, and authority substantial enough that even the Prime Minister deferred to him. The Raiden family had controlled the region for centuries, though it had previously used the surname Hokushin. 4 39 45

Originally a swordsmanship master, Ryoma later became a researcher specializing in plasma technology. His plasma-development results were considered sufficient grounds for acquittal even if he had misappropriated funds, indicating that the financial-fraud charge used against him was not the true reason for his imprisonment. 36 38

Cocolia targeted ME Corp and removed Ryoma through a power struggle, imprisoning him while seizing his company. She kept him in a heavily fortified prison equipped with extensive surveillance, mechs, and explosives. 4 36

Jiang Cheng forcibly liberated Ryoma after overwhelming the prison's defenses. Ryoma initially misread Jiang Cheng's relationships with Mei, Xilian, and Kiana, but accepted Jiang Cheng after learning that Xilian was his guardian and witnessing the extent of Jiang Cheng's strength. 36 37 38

Following his rescue, Ryoma mobilized the Raiden family's retainers, reestablished his influence in Nagazora, and helped conceal Jiang Cheng's group from Schicksal. He also provided a high-security weapons-testing facility for Jiang Cheng and Mei to assess their abilities. 39 44 49 50

Personality

Ryoma is deeply protective of Raiden Mei, though his imprisonment left him painfully aware that he had failed to shield her from Cocolia or the abuse she suffered in Nagazora. Jiang Cheng's assertion that Ryoma had not protected his own daughter prevents him from making demands about Mei's relationship. 38 39

In ordinary situations, Ryoma can appear comedic, flustered, and easily overwhelmed—particularly when attempting to mediate the conflict between Mei, Kiana, and Xilian. 37 48 When Nagazora's security is at stake, however, this demeanor disappears: he becomes a decisive commander who directs retainers, contacts former subordinates, and manages outside scrutiny. 39 49

He is capable of revising his views when confronted with evidence. After seeing Jiang Cheng's power and Mei's controlled Herrscher state, Ryoma abandons his prior assumptions about what he could accomplish against a Herrscher alone. 38 50
