Huang Yaozu sat in a seat at the very back of the movie theater. Li Guoqiang followed him and sat beside him.
"Want one?" He held out a cigarette pack.
"Thanks."
Li Guoqiang took one. After they lit up and took a drag, he could not help asking, "Why?"
"I told you before, some things can't be judged by appearances alone."
"Any ghost in this world, once it touches a human body, possesses it, devours its seven souls, and turns it into an empty shell of flesh."
"That female corpse you saw in the parking lot was like that. So was that old man just now."
"Even if you shoot them dead, they're only sealed inside the corpses. They're very hard to kill, and once a living person touches them, they'll still be possessed."
"The corpses of those possessed by ghosts and then killed are all taken away by a specialized autopsy department."
Huang Yaozu flicked off some ash. Mixed with sparks, it drifted lightly onto his shoes and the floor before the sparks went out.
In a bitter, low voice, he said, "Less than half a year after I took office, I got curious and looked into it."
At that point, he fell silent.
"And what happened?" Li Guoqiang pressed.
"The result... the result was three words: 'Not allowed to investigate.' There was resistance from all sides. Even vicious ghosts came to warn me! I chickened out, then got divorced and settled down to be the head of the Miscellaneous Affairs Division."
"Ghosts? They're that arrogant? Why didn't you shoot it dead?"
"Heh, how was I supposed to?" Huang Yaozu suddenly snapped. "It was wearing that identity. Tell me, how was someone from the Miscellaneous Affairs Division supposed to do anything?"
"Do you think ghosts only possess ordinary civilians?"
