Background / History

Yan Ming was one of Ling Yun's twelve disciples. Ling Yun and three disciples died during a palace coup in the Capital City; the surviving disciples later separated over differing philosophies. Yan Ming left the capital, grievously wounded in both soul and acupoints, leaving him with less than a tenth of his former cultivation. 17 22 104

While passing through Baiyun County, Yan Ming intervened when Old Master Sun was attacked and took a blade for him. The Sun family saved his life and placed him in the county yamen, where he became head chef. 22

He concealed his Blade-Catcher identity while working in the kitchen. After observing Chen Zhuo's extraordinary knife work and rapid mastery of the Zhengyang Blade Technique, Yan Ming attempted to test him as a potential apprentice. Believing Chen's talent exceeded his own qualifications as a teacher, he instead accepted Chen on Ling Yun's behalf as the thirteenth disciple and his junior martial brother. 5 15 17
