Xu Yang began as one of the struggling trainees of Wei Yuan Hall. He regularly gave Qian Jiaxing guidance on the Turtle-Snake Great Stance without asking for anything in return, forming the closest friendship among their group while keeping it discreet within the hall. 15

He showed caution before his rise to prominence. He refused to join Zhang Yong, Zhang Hong, and Luo Dehu in hunting exotic beasts, acquired Muscle-Softening Powder from Qiu Wenjie for a planned operation, and chose to spend accumulated Martial Dao Longevity Points on improving the Mountain-Shaking Bear Fist. 22 His successful Qi Gathering soon established him as a martial artist despite his previously ordinary aptitude. 29 30

Xu Yang is ruthless toward persistent threats.
